I began this endeavor based on my previous experience in Shenzhen as an Intensive English teacher focused on an entire curriculum of Language Arts in the lower grades for Chinese students who were especially weak in their English language skills. I resigned from the school and returned stateside to obtain OG training and did the study that prepared me to not only teach English to children and adults with dyslexia, but which also gave me the necessary skills to be a screener of dyslexia. It was my great joy to teach English to both regular and dyslexic learners, to screen children for dyslexia, and to network with a dyslexia center in Shenzhen and child psychologists in both Shenzhen and Hong Kong as well as to make life-long friends until COVID-19 caused a disruption and ultimately, I returned back to the US.

Buena Vista Concordia International School (BCIS) is a new international school being set up by Lutheran Church Hong Kong Synod (LCHKS). LCHKS already has some 40 local Chinese schools that are operating in Hong Kong. This is its first international school. Dr. Al Schmidt (founder of the 3 LCMS Concordia international schools in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Hanoi, Vietnam) worked very hard together with Dr. Yung (president of LCHKS) along with its first team of teachers and administrative staff in order to launch the school in its first school year (2011-2012).The 2013-2014 school year has reached almost 175 students! English is being spoken increasingly in the hallways, restrooms, playgrounds, cafeteria and library as well as the classrooms as the students progress in their use of the English language. It's awesome to teach here! Dr. Kevin Brockberg, BCIS Head of School, has done an outstanding job of moving BCIS forward in every way imagineable! He truly has been sent by God, and it has been a great joy working for and with him. Parents, students, and teachers alike adore him, and attribute the growth and progress of BCIS to him.The bulk of BCIS students are Chinese rather than international students at this point. The Chinese students are working extremely hard together with parental participation to learn English and comprehend the core subject materials in the classrooms, K-9.I teach ESL to the children in grades 2-4 this year, and love it! My greatest joys while living in Shenzhen are those obtained while teaching and working with the children! The children are precious indeed and their passion and energy as well as speed in learning English is astounding, particularly the younger they are! Each student is a gift from God and I'm so glad to be blessed by Him in teaching these children English!If you every come to Shenzhen or Hong Kong, be sure to let me know. I student taught 15 brilliant, wonderful, creative, and on-task Hispanic children at Caprock Elementary in the Keller ISD in Keller, TX throughout the end of May! My cooperating teacher (supervisor/mentor/model) was absolutely fabulous! She was a delight to work with and to have train me! She challenged her students as well as used teaching methods that are new, interesting, and motivational for the students as well! It was a great experience serving these children with her! I learned so much and did a great job in teaching the children, too!

The children who go to school in this districts primarily come from families with more income. The attitude and behavior issue children were fewer overall based on my experience there as a substitute teacher. There were many of them, however, who lacked responsibility and a common sense about life. The only thing I could put it on was the fact that their parents did not teach these things to their children for whatever reason. Except for the previous mentioned observation about them, substituting for these kids was always a welcome delight!

It was a lot of fun subbing for teachers from K-12! I enjoyed the challenge in having only one class period to make a difference in the lives of the children and youth! We got the work done and had a lot of fun as well as hopefully improved attitudes, direction, and world views! It was always a special treat to work with the Life Skills children & youth as well as the Special Ed. students. The kids requiring the greatest challenge in getting them to see a hope for their future are the "regular" kids. AP kids have no problem in that respect but the "regular" kids think they are going no where and so they will go no where... they have no vision, no sense of purpose or value or direction... they have little support or guidance from home and many of their parents could care less from what I have gathered from the students. In as much as the Lord enabled me and school policy permit, I shared the love of Jesus with all the kids who were in my classes, and I prayed God's blessings and purpose into their lives.
