About Nelson M.

As a Head Data Engineer at LangWallet, I lead the development and maintenance of the data pipeline and infrastructure for a fintech startup that is using natural language processing to create a new UX for crypto. I use FastAPI, Python, and AWS to build scalable and robust data solutions that support the business needs and goals. I also collaborate with the product and engineering teams to deliver data-driven insights and features that enhance the user experience and retention rate.In addition to my professional role, I am also finishing a Master's Degree in Computational Mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin, where I conduct research on wellpath trajectory reconstruction using B-Splines and Julia. This has honed my skills in applied mathematics, algorithm development, and scientific computing. I am passionate about learning new technologies and domains, and I am looking for opportunities that allow me to leverage my highly technical background and data engineering expertise to solve challenging and impactful problems.

In graduate school I have been blessed to be able to complement myprogramming/devops skills with a strong education as an engineer andindependent researcher. I have spent virtually all of my time here learning, andpainstakingly relearning, math, physics, and mechanics. My research has been incomputational mechanics, and my masters project has been developing a JuliaLibrary to reconstruct wellpath trajectories using B-Splines from a set of surveysamples. My advisor is funded by the oil industry. This has taught me a lot aboutapplied mathematics and self reliance. Being able to read complex andmathematically dense research papers and implement algorithms containedtherein is a skill I expect to be useful in my career.

Here I worked under Li-Ta Lo and Davis Herring, two members of the WG21 C++ standards committee, to test and study a reference implementation of Fixed Point Arithmetic that is planned to eventually be added to the C++ standard library. Studying this forced me to ask fundamental questions about what defines good software, and how that enhances and enables science. Which physics problems suffer in accuracy or speed from relying on floating point arithmetic? What is the correct way, for example, that a fixed point arithmetic class should handle overflowing bits during square roots? What behavior would our target users expect? How much flexibility should users expect from a part of the C++ standard library, and how is this library falling short? These sorts of questions changed the way I view program design and computing more generally.

    Data Engineer

During my time as a data engineer at Unchained Capital, my main purpose wasparsing data from the bitcoin blockchain and turning it into meaningful analysisfor the community - some of which eventually became extremely popular. In orderto do this analysis it required a lot of low level programming - in 2017 when thisproject began there was not much out there in the way of blockchain analysistooling. So the first part of my time at Unchained was spent developing our owncustom bitcoin blk.dat parser in C - we called it bitcoin-iterate, based off of priorwork from bitcoin core dev Rusty Russell. It would take as an input blockchain datafiles, assembling them into an ordered chain of blocks similar to how a bitcoindnode operates. It then would iterate through each block and extract specific dataelements, such as block data, transaction data, input data, output data, andunspent transaction output data, based on user-defined criteria. Using bitcoiniterate we were able to make fascinating insights into the bitcoin economy - for example, accurately determining the distribution of block versions within the Bitcoin blockchain, and the distribution of ages of unspent transaction outputs - made into a stacked time series plot later deemed "hodl waves". The next part ofmy time at Unchained was spent turning bitcoin-iterate and the various otheranalytics tools we developed into real data pipelines. At first, this took the form ofcron jobs and tightly managed repositories of systemd services - but eventually weleft the stone age and, using ETL concepts as an architectural guideline, I had all ofthis analysis updated daily via airflow with redundancies on numerous AWSinstances, with neat, well defined projects easy to deploy via ansible roles. Of course I also learned a lot about linux, C, git, and all the other necessary tools to be a competent software engineer.
