About Nelson Wallace

Optical Systems Engineering -System performance management activities. Developed performance requirements and allocated or translated them into designs, created specifications, cost estimates, evaluated vendors, managed fabrication, subassembly integration, and testing of state-of-the-art optical sensor systems. Performed key front-end trade-offs, prioritized optical system requirements, and developed solutions or technical alternatives in order to reduce program risks. Optimized system performance through requirements specification and performance analyses. Led optics integrated product teams, participated in hardware testing, troubleshooting optical system hardware problems, and final buy-off. Source selection experience.Optical Systems Performance Prediction - Modeling, Analysis, & Simulations -Developed and applied computer models to predict and optimize overall instrument performance, including signal-to-noise ratio, system and optics modulation transfer function, classification accuracy, ground resolved distance, radiometric accuracy, sub-pixel centroid tracker accuracy, and/or special instrument-specific performance measures, while minimizing the effects of degradations such as jitter, optics aberrations, detector noise and cross-talk, electronics noise, stray light, absorption and multiple scattering effects from long atmospheric paths or murky water, Fresnel diffraction, and from performance variations due to manufacturing, assembly, alignment tolerances, and environmental effects. Combined sensor radiometric performance models with star catalogs and astronomical algorithms to assess and optimize sensor star tracking effectiveness. Detailed Optical Engineering, Design, and Analysis -Proficient with current optical design, analysis, and stray light software; specifically, Code V, OSLO, ZEMAX, Accos V, HEXAGON, MACOS, Mini-APART, ASAP, SOAR, Guerap V, FRED, Light Tools and TracePro, LOTS & GLAD propagation codes, and TFCalc thin film code.Specialties: Expert technical and managerial skills relevant to advanced optical systems. Technical areas include engineering to develop optical systems concepts and system performance models, and to perform detailed optical design and analysis. Active in a broad range of aerospace, biomedical, and commercial projects. Most recent work on remote sensing systems requirements translation & allocation, sensor models and algorithms, optical design & analysis, and assembly & alignment.
