Profile bio

About Néstor Morales Hernández

I've been working as a researcher for more than 10 years. As a result of this work, I own a PhD and I am author of several publications in journals and magazines.Currently, I work as Data Scientist and researcher at System73. There, my research is focused on understanding the problems Internet is facing, and to come up with new and creative solutions. In the last year, my main tasks consist of providing new solutions to our main product and analyzing its behaviour on real deployments based on metrics. My first job consisted in the development of a remote control for an autonomous prototype, called Verdino. After that, I changed to another project in which we developed systems for monitoring and surveillance of wide remote areas, focusing our efforts on the surveillance of sea farms, fire monitoring in the forest, and real time analysis of different parameters applied to agriculture.Once this project finished, I spent 4 months as a participant in the Google Summer of Code 2009, by implementing an algorithm for the stitching of aerial images obtained at Costa Rica.In the same year, I moved back to the project Verdino and started my Thesis. During this time I explored several techniques for the detection of obstacles applied to the problem of autonomous vehicles navigation in crowded pedestrian areas. After some early works, I started working with stereo vision. At the same time, I worked on the trajectory generation and path following algorithms of Verdino, which have been successfully tested on real crowded scenarios in different locations. During my thesis, I did two internships, at University of Parma and at KU Leuven.I have been working on the Adaptive Optics real time control system of the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), at Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC). I've also worked as freelance software engineer at AEMet. I'm currently employed as scientist at System73.

Listed skills include Linux, C++, Python, Java, and 36 others.
