The goal of this laboratory is to advance our understanding of and ability to treat corneal pathologies that involve the growth of blood and lymphatic vessels (angiogenesis). Our approaches include improvements to surgical techniques and development of new pharmaceutical therapies for various corneal pathologies. In this position I designed the experiments for and wrote successful NIH, VA, and DoD research grants.

I studied the anatomical and molecular evolution of the mammalian neocortex. The expansion of this six-layered structure in humans is thought to be directly responsible for our advanced cognitive abilities. I found that even though birds and reptiles don't have a neocortex, their forebrains do share similar patterns of connections and the cells in their cognitive centers bear strikingly similar molecular signatures to our own. My advisor for this work was Dr. Clifton Ragsdale.

I was the teaching assistant for several years of the graduate biology course in Ethics and Responsible Conduct of Research. My supervisor was the then-Dean of Biological Sciences Dr. Nancy Schwartz. My responsibilities included recruiting appropriate local speakers for each week's class, assuring that all NIH-mandated issues were covered, and monitoring discussions in lecture-sized and small focus groups.
