About Neven Caplar

I am member of DIRAC (Institute for Data-intensive Research in Astrophysics and Cosmology) at the University of Washington. I work on the commissioning of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) 🔭 + and the commissioning of LINCC-Frameworks (LSST Interdisciplinary Network for Collaboration and Computing).LINCC - Frameworks aims to grow and develop software for the analysis of the large amounts of data expected from LSST. I am currently guiding the development of TAPE; the code for efficient and scalable analysis of time-domain data . I have recently also become project manager for LSDB ; the code for efficient and scalable cross-matching & analysis of astronomy catalogs. As a member of the science verification team for Vera Rubin Observatory I have been working on the analysis of difference imagining pipeline.Previously, I was working at Princeton University on the algorithm development in the astrophysical data group. My main focus was on the data processing pipeline for the upcoming Prime Focus Spectrograph, to be installed at Subaru Telescope. Through combination of detailed modeling and machine learning methods we were able to predict optical response of the instrument to high accuracy. My scientific work is based on the analysis of large datasets and development of methods to better understand statistical properties of these samples. In particular, I am working on the analysis and interpretation of time-series data. With advance of large surveys, these methods are very quickly becoming very powerful tool to understand properties of the galaxies in the Universe, but their size often demands innovative analysis methods. I received my PhD from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. I worked on the evolution of galaxies and their black holes, using statistical methods and comparing the result with the data at wide range ages of the Universe.

I am working on commissioning of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and LINCC-Frameworks, contributing to the growth and development of software for the analysis of vast data sets.I am currently guiding the development of TAPE and LSDB codes. TAPE is an efficient and scalable analysis tool for time-domain data. LSDB is a project focused on efficient and scalable cross-matching and analysis of astronomy catalogs. These initiatives aim to empower scientific exploration in the LSST era, facilitating collaboration and enabling groundbreaking discoveries.I am also part of the science verification team for LSST, where I contribute to the analysis of the difference imaging pipeline.
  • Princeton University
    Associate Professional Specialist
    Princeton University Sep 2017 - Aug 2022
    Greater New York City Area
My main focus was algorithm and pipeline development for the Prime Focus Spectrograph.Developed methods to generate and fit 2-dimensional points spread function of the telescope. This includes taking of data, developing methods to measure the optical wavefront, developing the optical model, and generating the point spread function.Developed code to assist commissioning process. For instance, I created code to measure the actual positions of fiber obscuring covers to the manufactured standard. Improved optical modeling of the camera in Zemax, and used modeled data to predict and compare with observational data.My scientific work during this time:Developed a model which, using GPU accelerated simulations, explains long term variability of active galactic nuclei.Led an effort that showed that it is possible to measure the history of star-formation of galaxies by measuring the scatter of star-formation in galaxies today.
  • Eth Zurich
    Phd Student
    Eth Zurich Feb 2013 - Aug 2017
    Zürich Area, Switzerland
Developed semi-analytical models of interaction between central black holes and galaxies. These models can explain growth of black holes and star-formation of galaxies in the last 10 billion years.Determined variability properties of AGN (active galactic nuclei) in the Palomar Transient Survey. This included full re-calibration of the survey, and developing methods for analysis and computation of ~28,000 light-curves.Showed that women authors receive around 10% less citation in astronomy papers than what would be expected based on the properties of their paper than if they were men. This research was done using random forest algorithm, based on the data collated from open astronomy databases.
