The Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) is a vertically integrated Power Utility Company in The Cayman Islands (Grand Cayman to be specific). I am delighted to lead a team Dynamic Engineers. Performed in depth power system studies, utilizing DIgSILENT PowerFactory and PSS/E simulation software packages to determine grid impact steady-state and dynamic stability of the power system under different operation and contingency conditions. Developed least-cost power system medium and long-term plans including demand forecasting using regression analysis and econometric modelling, as well as develop critical fault clearing time for each busbar on the transmission line network.

Managed with a staff complement 25 full-time staff and ten contractor teams, the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the distribution network, supplying over 125,000 customers in the Kingston Metropolitan Area. My daily duties were as follows:• I managed the operation of the distribution network in the capital city of Kingston, Jamaica• Managed a team comprised of 25 full-time staff and external contractors ranging from 5 to 30 staff depending on the nature of the weekly maintenance operation.• Responded to day-to-day system failures and restored power to the customers within the guaranteed standard time. • Planned and executed medium to long term maintenance programmes • Managed staff training and development and staff appraisal• Analysed daily fault occurrences and implemented mitigation strategies• Performed daily vegetation management operation• Performed monthly load reading of substation transformers and other selected pole and mounted transformers• Installed distribution automated switches on selected feeders to improve reliability and satisfy N-1 security contingencies• Replaced defective pole line hardware on a weekly basis• Designed and constructed distribution lines to improve system as part of a long term maintenance programme• Planned staff vacation leave, training and human resources related matters• Written project proposal document to acquire funding for capital projects• Planned weekly live line work• Improve system reliability indices, SAIDI, SAIFI CAIDI, using smart grid and several fault mitigation techniques.

Designed primary distribution network to supply electricity to new customers as well as enhancing the reliability and security of the distribution grid, as follows:• Collected and reviewed customers’ requests for the connection of new loads or distributed generation. • Supervised the construction of distribution lines extension.• Assessed the feasibility of connecting the new loads or distributed generation by applying load flow and faults analyses as well as having discussions with colleagues from the planning department and other design engineers.• Conducted field visits and captured pertinent land base data to establish poles position, span lengths, transformers and switches locations and grounding/earthing requirements. • Prepared the designs of the distribution systems, which account for: the protection and coordination with the existing distribution systems, the reliability and network contingencies such as N-1 contingencies for critical loads. Applied special grounding/earthing and lightning protection designs for distribution systems which are located in areas with high soil resistivity and high lightning activities.• Designed distribution network to improve voltage regulation and power factor, such as installing voltage regulators and capacitor banks at strategic locations.• Designed ground/earthing systems for transformer, voltage regulator, capacitor bank and switch locations• Liaised with local planning agencies, parish council and land owners and discussed prospective lines and cables installations and negotiate permission and easement requirement. • Performed economics assessment of medium to long term distribution network improvement and life cycle costs of power system equipment • Liaised with local planning agencies and developers to ascertain prospective development and loading requirements for futuristic projects.• Obtained switching authorization to operate all type of switches and circuit breakers on the distribution network.

Kingston, Jamaica

Investigated, identified and resolved power quality issues on the distribution feeders, utilizing measurements and analyses. Developed material specifications to acquire robust T&D pole line equipment to function efficiently during normal and severe environmental conditions, with the following activities:• Developed specifications for all T&D equipment in accordance with reputable International Standards, such as: NESC, CSA, ANSI, EPRI, IEEE, IEC, IET, CIGRE, NERC and WECC.• Developed material bulletins for all new materials entering the T&D systems.• Conducted training on the proper usage of all new materials and tools entering the T&D systems.• Reviewed customers’ damage claim forms and research JPS fault data history and other incident reports to ascertain if there was any correlation between customers’ damage claims and JPS fault/incident reports. Prepared and submitted reports of the findings of respective customer claim. • Installed “power quality data recorders” at strategic locations on the distribution network to record power quality related events. Then, downloaded and analysed the data. These activities helped to reconcile customers’ claims in a timely manner, as well as provide supporting evidence to improve the distribution network. Subsequently, the power quality related issues and customer claims have reduced considerably.
