My consulting practice, New Voodou, provides marketing strategy, branding, content development, and media relations to the design community. Through my work as an advisor and author, I address the role of design and designers in a variety of contexts. Working with collaborators or independently, my work explores issues of professional practice with an emphasis on identity, image, and brand. For many years, I have collaborated with Marjanne Pearson and Paul Nakazawa working with the leadership of talent-based organizations to develop strategies for integrated decision-making. By reframing the traditional perspective we created a framework and lexicon for discussion of new models of practice. We have taught an influential course at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design through the executive education program for over 10 years. Marjanne and I continue our collaborative exploration of practice in a series of articles on marketing strategy that they have developed for the SMPS Marketer. Our most recent contribution “Small Firms Act Big” (October 2012) builds on the concepts we introduced in “Preactive Strategies (June 2012). We are also co-authors of the chapter on the Chief Marketing Officer for the Marketing Handbook for the Design and Construction Professional.I am a frequent lecturer, panelist, and workshop leader on a range of design, real estate and marketing topics for SMPS, the AIA and ULI. Author of numerous articles on real estate, design, and marketing topics for the Urban Land Magazine, CONTRACT and the SMPS Marketer, I comment occasionally on design related issues and have served on the editorial boards of several industry journals.Specialties: I have particular expertise and experience with design practices focused on workplace, healthcare, urban design and commercial mixed-use issues.
