About Nancy Frishberg

Let me acknowledge my past several years as an olive oil purveyor. Our ranch in the eastern part of Alameda County, California, produces award winning extra virgin olive oil from trees covering about 40 of our 182 acres: RanchoMilagro.USAnd, a member of the organizing group of LinguisticsCareerLaunch.com, 2021's one-month intensive for career-curious linguistics students and faculty, administrators and alumni/ae, lives on as content on the website and its related YouTube channel. In July 2024 we reconvene at a distance. I've been an organizer, a moderator, an instructor for 2024, and a talent scout for the associated podcast LinguisticsCareerCast.comAs a User Experience professional, I advocate for the user and customer, designing and conducting research activities to confirm that your target users and customers can find and act on what they need from your website, written materials, and instructions. We interpret the results collaboratively, keeping your business goals, human cognition principles, and effective design in mind.Qualitative customer and user research answers "Why?" and "How?" questions. This approach provides rich data about your customers and how people use your products, to complement automated data sources about digital product usage - those tell you When, Where and How often. I help your organization design products and services for users and customers; create processes for internal audiences; and communicate with both external and internal people. Coaching for orgs: Collaborate to include more team members in the conversation about learning what customers want, and how to deliver it to them.Coaching for individuals: People who are seeking new opportunities with the broad range of roles in user experience (including research, design, writing, information architecture, accessibility, internationalization, operations, instructional design) or leaving this specialty, at all stages of careers. And, I create artifacts of lasting value. Ask me about them.Specialties: Coaching and direct service in qualitative user research, such as concept development and confirmation, product evaluation, field studies, usability evaluation, information architecture, programmatic relationships with customers, group process, design games for small and large groups.

Listed skills include User Experience, User Centered Design, Information Architecture, Usability Testing, and 46 others.

The recorded content from those sessions is available and free via our website or YouTube channel, gathered into thematic playlists.Summer 2022 engaged a new group with 2+ month long Tweetorial, covering similar content in asynchronous tweets and synchronous Gather meetings. Meanwhile we continued to record and share our presentations to various conferences.Since December 2022 we are producing LinguistCareercast.com, a podcast featuring people with linguistics degrees at all levels who share their career journeys into many fields, where they may or may not be called "linguist."

Building on experience in higher education, financial services, digital technology, and non-profit organizations, I bring fresh eyes to help you evaluate your product design and business strategy goals with feedback from prospective customers and users. From September 2015 through March 2018, much of my energy was dedicated to the Center for Civic Design (civicdesign.org) where the tag line is "ensuring voter intent through design." This work combined my interests in • literacy• accessibility• multilingualism• user experience, and • democracyUsing a multi-pronged approach to usability and the voter experience, we worked with election officials, advocacy organizations, privacy & security experts. I engaged with job seekers, elders, disabled youth and adults, to evaluate auto-personalization features on the computer for the product that became Morphic.org, supported by funding from the US Department of Education.
