Letterbox is a tech startup founded by four University of Pretoria students that facilitates easy dialogue between organisations and their customers and ultimately seeks to democratize good customer service. The start-up was the winner of the TuksNovation Activate competition in 2018, hosted by TuksNovation, a high-tech business incubator. My technical responsibilities included creating and maintaining the web-app (https://letterboxapp.co.za/). It uses progressive web app technologies allowing it to be installed onto desktop and mobile devices and facilitating some offline capabilities. Furthermore, responsive web design principles are implemented allowing the UI to differ based on screen sizes to offer the best experience across different devices.The web-app also has its own “stories” feature which is similar to Instagram Stories or WhatsApp Status updates. To achieve this, complex algorithms had to be used to facilitate image compression in JavaScript. The web-app also syncs data in real-time with the Android and iOS app. We used Firebase real-time database to store our data. I was also responsible for planning and designing the data structures we would use in our database. We even implemented a real-time chat system within the app that works between the platforms. Letterbox got more than 1050 users during the beta testing phase. We made it to the interview phase for the Y Combinator incubation round, and got a 10 minute interview with Michael Siebel, Y Combinator CEO and Founder of Twitch.

• Developed a Practice Management System for Medical RCS that is used by their client medical practices to store patient details, handle appointments and process medical aid claims• Built a web-app using Angular and typescript with a firebase database and an node.js express backend server hosted on AWS’s Elastic Beanstalk • Designed the system from scratch, and worked with 2 other team-members to build a robust and scalable platform

• Built a Windows service for logging errors from a Windows computer and storing them onto a remote database• Used C# and Microsoft system libraries for the service which automatically ran on start-up, the data was send to Rabbit MQ running on a CentOS virtual machine, which then used python to store the data in Elastic Search• Learnt a lot about the importance of security in software design

I was an Assistant Lecturer for COS 132 (Imperative Programming). Main duties performed included presenting lecturers on C++, preparing class exercises, marking semester tests and exams.

I was a University of Pretoria teaching assistant for 2 modules, COS 216 (Netcentric Computing) and COS 122 (Operating Systems). The role included supervising and assisting students with their practicals and also marking class tests. COS 216 is based on web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, PHP and frameworks such as Bootstrap. Android development is also covered. COS 122 covers operating system concepts using C++.
