About Natasha Haugnes
How do people learn? How should we teach? How can we know that teaching and learning are equitable and successful? These are the questions that drive my work in higher education. I returned to teaching English & Writing to undergraduate artists four years ago, after an 18-year journey through founding and running an academic support center, and then helping to launch and build a teaching center, all in a dedicated art & design university context. My approach to my work is hands-on and pragmatic, informed by current research and daily conversations with students, teachers, and administrators about teaching and learning. My newest book, Meaningful Grading: A Guide For Faculty in the Arts, (with Hoag Holmgren & Martin Springborg) is available from West Virginia University Press.
Listed skills include Teaching, Higher Education, University Teaching, Curriculum Development, and 20 others.

English For Art Purposes Curriculum Coordinator
Designed curriculum for content-specific sections of English for Art Purposes, level 4 for English learners. Coordinated up to 7 instructors teaching this level, holding regular grading norming sessions and debriefs. Taught the course each semester. Adapted the course to the online environment (Zoom) in March 2020.
Faculty Developer
I supported the director in founding the Faculty Development Department. While part of my role was administrative—conducting needs assessments, establishing protocols, etc.— the bulk of the work was supporting instructors in all aspects of teaching and course design through consultations, observations, tailored department-specific training and in-house conferences. I established the First Year Rubrics Initiative to develop normed rubrics that support consistent grading and published research on the effectiveness of using rubrics in an art and design context. (Spoiler alert: when integrated into the rest of the course, rubrics support learning and creativity.) My commitment to rooting unconscious bias out of grading and other aspects of teaching flourished in this phase of my carreer, and continues to inform my work.
Esl Textbook Author
I have authored two ESL textbooks for Pearson. Northstar Reading and Writing, level 2, is now in its 5th edition. I have been fortunate to work under the guidance of Carol Numrich on this series. Focus on Writing, level 1 is in its first edition.
Founding Director Of The Academy Resource Center
Founded, developed and managed the Academy Resource Center at the Academy of Art University in response to a need to support students. With seven academic coaches, I developed a referral system for instructors to be able to refer students for follow up. Our programs developed out of the needs we perceived among the students. The ARC ultimately came to encompass Disability services and coaching, academic coaching and study skills workshops and classes. I left this position to help found the Office of Faculty Development.
Esl Instructor
Developed and taught art and design content-based English as a Second Language courses. Managed the Writing Lab.
Lecturer In English Composition
I taught several sections of English Composition to graduate students who needed to improve their writing skills. I also taught Composition to undergraduates in the Business School.
Lead Tefl Teacher Trainer
I designed and lead the ESL Teacher training component of pre-service training for new Peace Corps volunteers. I conducted two trainings in Cape Verde and one at the Peace Corps training center in Thies, Senegal.
