About Natasha Haugnes

How do people learn? How should we teach? How can we know that teaching and learning are equitable and successful? These are the questions that drive my work in higher education. I returned to teaching English & Writing to undergraduate artists four years ago, after an 18-year journey through founding and running an academic support center, and then helping to launch and build a teaching center, all in a dedicated art & design university context. My approach to my work is hands-on and pragmatic, informed by current research and daily conversations with students, teachers, and administrators about teaching and learning. My newest book, Meaningful Grading: A Guide For Faculty in the Arts, (with Hoag Holmgren & Martin Springborg) is available from West Virginia University Press.

    Academy Of Art University
I supported the director in founding the Faculty Development Department. While part of my role was administrative—conducting needs assessments, establishing protocols, etc.— the bulk of the work was supporting instructors in all aspects of teaching and course design through consultations, observations, tailored department-specific training and in-house conferences. I established the First Year Rubrics Initiative to develop normed rubrics that support consistent grading and published research on the effectiveness of using rubrics in an art and design context. (Spoiler alert: when integrated into the rest of the course, rubrics support learning and creativity.) My commitment to rooting unconscious bias out of grading and other aspects of teaching flourished in this phase of my carreer, and continues to inform my work.
