Inspired by the NW Highlands of Scotland & my father, I did a Geology degree at Edinburgh, & in 1976 applied to drive the postbus at Torridon, but was rejected. So I spent an amazing "summer" in Svalbard working on expedition boats, & at the Sedgwick museum, ending up at Strathclyde Uni to do a Marine Geology PhD with the IGS (now BGS). Had many more fantastic voyages on research boats around the west & north coast of Scotland. 3 years later joined BNOC, soon to be transformed by Mrs Thatcher into Britoil and later taken over by BP. Went back to Uni in 1983 for 3 months to successfully complete my PhD. Spent much of those 10 years working in field development and production and moved to Aberdeen in 1984. Set up PGL with Alan James in 1990, on the basis that we wanted fun & didn't like other people telling us what was good for us. Rapidly concluded that the secret to success is through finding people better than you are to work with & making it an enjoyable place to be. Also developed a strong view on the benefits to a business of recognising its role in society, & after reading "The Carbon Wars" by geologist Jeremy Leggett in the late 90s, I realised the significance on mankind's success with hydrocarbon exploitation & the implications that had for the future. As a result awareness and action around environmental and community was hard-wired into the philosophy and culture of PGL.Have since closely followed the global warming “debate” & the political manoeuvring around the world. Therefore familiar with the key technical issues around climate modelling, renewable technology, CO2 storage, and energy-saving.In an attempt to give the company a more sustainable future, in 2007 we brought PGL into the Senergy Group. I joined the Executive Team. From 2008 - 2011 assisted with integration issues, Alternative Energy, M & A and CSR. In 2011 I returned more to my "roots", taking responsibility for Senergy's global subsurface business until late 2013.I moved on to make the most of life with a mixture of ad hoc consulting and other personal interests and remain keen to assist open-minded, forward-thinking businesses.
