Established in 2019, by artist, McArthur Binion, the Modern Ancient Brown Foundation, endeavors to support the intersection between the visual and literary arts in the Detroit community. As well as elevating the city as a hub and resource for the artistic exploration of contemporary artists.The Modern Ancient Brown Collection, curated by McArthur Binion and Executive Director, Nia Batts is a contemporary collection of the interdisciplinary work of diverse, emerging artists, and established artists; whose work has been historically underrepresented. Current artists in The Modern Ancient Brown Collection include: Allie McGhee, Bob Thompson, Carol Harris, Carrie Mae Weems, Charles McGee, Gordon Parks, Jules Allen, Judy Pfaff, Kerry James Marshall, McArthur Binion, Nancy Brett, Rashid Johnson, Sam Levy-Jones, Stanley Whitney, Torkwase Dyson and Wifredo Lam. In 2021, the Foundation will launch the Modern Ancient Brown Artist Residency, a one-month literary residency, located in McArthur Binion’s Detroit studio; a renovated church rectory designed in the mid-century modern style, made popular by Michigan’s art and architecture community. The residency program will make invitations to a diverse group of emerging artists, who traditionally create in visual mediums; and in conjunction with a $10,000 grant, encourage them to take the time and space to explore and tell their own stories.

Detroit Blows is a one-stop, non-toxic finishing salon, featuring blowouts and beauty services. An impact-driven retail shop, that will house a rotating lineup of socially conscious brands, from home goods to hair care products. Even better, $1 of every blowout service and a percentage of the retail footprint will support Detroit-based female entrepreneurs, and women entering and re-entering the workforce.
