As a postdoctoral researcher at the Salk institute I used a a variety of techniques including electrophysiological recordings, viral gene expression tools, mono-synaptic rabies tracing and genetically modified mouse lines to study spinal pre-motor circuitry and spinal cell types. Most recently I was using single cell RNA sequencing to investigate how spinal interneuron diversity relates to complexity of movement.

Using whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology recordings I demonstrated that the inhibitory neurotransmitters GABA and glycine are not co-released onto motor neurons in the spinal cords of juvenile mice (Bhumbra et al. 2012). I then determined the quantal parameters of the motor neuron to Renshaw cell synapse, by performing paired recordings between the two cell types and analysing the data using a novel quantal analysis method. Using this data I was able to estimate the degree of convergence of motoneurons onto individual Renshaw cells in the lumbar levels of the spinal cord (Moore et al. 2015).
