CurrentPerformance Art Live Foundation (P. A. Live) is an artist-led initiative in Ireland, dedicated to and invested in live performance and live art made by artist-performers. Supporting Irish artists in developing and presenting live performance in collaborative ways, P.A. Live promotes Irish performance as a strong and vibrant practice with important historical lineage. On May 21 2016 Niamh Murphy and Áine Phillips will curate a 12-hour live art and video event with 16 acclaimed Irish artists at Kilmainham Gaol to respond to its iconic historical associations with the 1916 Rising. The invited artists, from north and south of the border, who work in performance, live art and video will respond to the 1916 centenary, creating contemporary perspectives on our shared past, conflicts, crises and passions in relation to the Rising and its greatest monument, Kilmainham Gaol. Performance Art Live (P.A. Live) was formed in 2009, by Niamh Murphy and Amanda Coogan as, an artist-led initiative founded in response to the significant interest in live performance in the Visual Arts in Ireland. http://www.facebook.com/performance.art.foundationhttp://www.amandacoogan.com/performance-art-live-foundation-ireland.htmlIn 2010 P.A. Live, together with the artist Dominic Thorpe, presented the unique exhibition RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW at Kilmainham Gaol , which was viewed as a watershed exhibition in the calendar of events of Irish Visual arts. It featured some of Ireland's top contemporary artists working within the realm of performance art, north and south of the Border and focused on artists who have live performance as the central tenet of their practice and who work as artist-performers in duration. This live exhibition was distinctive, providing an in-depth focus on live performance art. Visitors to this free event experienced twenty live artists, performing simultaneously over a four-hour period throughout the cells and open areas of Kilmainham Gaol’s East Wing.

Dublin Castle is in the heart of the city and the heart of Irish history. Past events include the handing over of the Castle to Michael Collins in 1922, EU presidencies in 1996, 2004 and 2013, the visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to Ireland in 2011, and the celebrations marking the passage of the Marriage Equality Referendum in 2015. The Castle today is one of the country’s premier cultural sites and is used by the Government for prestigious functions of State, most significantly the inauguration of the President.
Tour Guide
Kilmainham Gaol opened in 1796 as the new County Gaol for Dublin. It closed its doors in 1924.Today the building symbolises the tradition of militant and constitutional nationalism from the rebellion of 1798 to the Irish Civil War of 1922-23. Leaders of the rebellions of 1798, 1803, 1848,1867 and 1916 were detained and in some cases executed here. Many members of the Irish Republican movement during the Anglo-Irish War (1919-21) were also detained in Kilmainham Gaol, guarded by British troops. Names such as Henry Joy McCracken, Robert Emmet, Anne Devlin, Charles Stewart Parnell and the leaders of 1916 will always be associated with the building. It should not be forgotten however that, as a county gaol, Kilmainham held thousands of ordinary men, women and children. Their crimes ranged from petty offences such as stealing food to more serious crimes such as murder or rape. Convicts from many parts of Ireland were held here for long periods waiting to be transported to Australia. Kilmainham Gaol Museum is operated and managed by the Office of Public Works.

For Straylight 2008 Murphy aimed to explore, develop and expand upon the notion of subverting public space; and the programme saw a number of acclaimed artists present their work in a series of diverse and unconventional locations across Dublin's city centre; Áine Philips slept overnight in the window of Filmbase, Alan Butlers video was screened in the window of a Temple Bar sex-shop while Lorena Cardona’s multi-screen installation was hosted in an internet café. Other artists included Chris Doyle, Tim Redfern, Donal Scannell, Anita Delaney, Paddy Jolley and Amanda Coogan whose’ video triptych Rhapsody in B was screened in the window of an electronics shop on Georges Street each night of the festival.Amanda Coogan co-curated Straylight 2009 with Murphy and they presented the Straylight Performance Weekender. It brought together the work of 25 different artists, from established and internationally recognised practicioners in the field of live performance work, to exciting new emerging artists. The festival took place over 4 days at the Dublin Art Mill. On Darklight’s launch night Redmond/ Murphy premiered their group performance Something Specials on Smithfield Plaza.http://www.darklight.ie/2009/09/23/straylight-performance-art-festival-2009/http://www.darklight.ie/about/archive/festival-2009/art/http://www.amandacoogan.com/1/post/2010/05/performance-art-live-foundation-ireland.html
