As an Environmental Scientist, I specialize in environmental regulations, particularly for biological and water resources. I manage and review a variety of projects including master plan, construction and demolition, invasive species management, installation development, and military relocation environmental documents. My job requires that I have an intimate knowledge of environmental law, particularly the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and Executive Order 12898 (Environmental Justice). I manage the production and submittal of environmental documents for Federal clients including the U.S. Air Force, National Park Service, US Coast Guard, US Customs and Border Protection, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the US Navy. I have also conducted numerous environmental compliance reviews associated with the FEMA Federal Public Assistance Grant Program.

During my tenure at Virginia Commonwealth University, I became the lead biology lab instructor. This position required a great deal of responsibility. I assisted new graduate teaching assistants with learning unfamiliar lecture material and I defined appropriate classroom etiquette to them. The labs corresponded to lectures given at VCU and I evaluated the quality of lab books used in conjunction with the lecture courses. I reorganized and implemented changes to the lab books when deemed appropriate. As lead lab instructor, I enriched the teaching experience for graduate students and conveyed a greater appreciation of the subject matter for undergraduates. Each class period required me to lecture on pertinent topics in biology and convey these to individuals unfamiliar with science. This required me to have an in depth knowledge of all levels of biology including microbiology, ecology, anatomy, pathology, genetics, zoology, and anthropology. These students, 24 in each session from various backgrounds, were required to take quizzes that I designed. I readily made myself available to assist students and TAs if they experienced any difficulty with the courses by having specific office hours. When teaching, I elucidated my thoughts to the students and integrated complicated biological information with an interesting and fresh approach. This required an in depth knowledge of Microsoft Office products and online interactive tools like Blackboard Academic Suite. I facilitated testing procedures for each of the courses taught, which included a reorganized template for testing and I performed numerous biological laboratory functions including but not limited to preparing chemical compounds, set up laboratories weekly, and repairing broken lab equipment when necessary.I demonstrated strong public speaking skills in the classroom and have given several presentations to the scientific community, often to leading professionals in biology, and I am comfortable doing so.

While working at the Virginia Commonwealth University as a graduate student in the Department of Biology, I developed and implemented my thesis research working with the Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina). I conducted a monitoring project using radio telemetry and GPS units to track movement patterns of turtles during the active season. The goal of our project was to limit initial movement following relocation. To curb their movement, I constructed a pen to hold the study turtles on site for one year prior to release. I obtained blood and tissue samples from the turtles to confirm their health status. Upon release, I analyzed and evaluated GPS and health screen data collected from the research site that required an intimate knowledge of various statistical programs. I adopted DGIF regulations when safely handling wildlife and collecting data. I revised field survey methods for greater accuracy and ensured accurate measurements could be made in the future.Laboratory analysis of swabs and blood smears was essential to my project. I am familiar with running PCR protocols and smearing blood using various staining techniques. As part of my PCR protocol, I was required to extract DNA supernatant from oral and cloacal swabs. I have worked with cancerous agents and other chemical compounds. An integral part of my research involved community outreach. I worked with Charles City County schools and motivated their students to gain an appreciation for conservation biology. I mentored three students selected to assist with my field research and led them to work on their own research projects. I also organized events for the community to participate in our study, including holding several "field days" where volunteers could assist in data collection. Another aspect of field research involves finding volunteers to assist with the project. I consistently recruited reliable undergraduate workers for field assistance.

During the summer of 2007, I worked for Duke University’s Temporary Hiring Program through Kelly Services. I was a data technician at the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) for a prostate cancer drug trial with Docetaxel. I was primarily responsible for obtaining and entering patient information into the network database and then appropriately filing it. Each month I participated in group discussions on the progress made on the project. As part of a research team, I was required to interact with the lead PhD project manager and other supervisors on a daily basis.
