I worked in the LGBTQ+ community as a youth group facilitator, peer-navigator, HIV tester as well as program assistant for over five years with Gay Men’s Health Crisis. Joining GMHC in 2018, I worked as a Peer-Youth intern where I recruited youth from The Ali Forney Center to The Clubhouse—our safe space for youth. I co-lead several groups and interventions during that time including Hot Topics and The Social. After my internship ended, I took on a new role as the PrEP Ambassador—a role in which I supported the prevention team in engaging youth in PrEP/PEP services and testing. It was in this position that I became well-versed in street outreach as well as online outreach.In my second year at GMHC I started working in our testing center as an HIV Tester. This position gave me the opportunity to become a certified phlebotomist as well as strengthen my skills at linking clients to care in terms of STI/HIV treatment, obtaining PEP/PrEP and referrals to mental health services, as well as front desk duties and navigating programs like AIRS and TREAT. When the testing center was partially closed due to COVID-19, I wanted to continue my work with GMHC and took the position of Peer Navigation Ambassador under Project Vogue. I was able to combine the skills gained from my previous positions in the agency to recruit clients and conduct check-ins as well as linkage to care/services. Earlier work in the field of web-design and social media management for small businesses had proven useful in the handling of the prevention team’s online presence as well as our work within the GET App which was developed for the Project Vogue initiative. Once the Testing Center was able to resume operations, I returned as a Program Assistant (Office Admin/Receptionist). In this role I was responsible for all front desk duties in the office as well as data entry. Tasks included making appointments (SquareSpace), checking in clients, and making sure their paperwork was in order (JotForm), answering phone calls and ensuring all four labs were stocked with necessary supplies and paperwork. I also distributed all at-home HIV tests that were requested as well as checking and logging STI results daily. I also worked as a receptionist and in the mail room for the rest of the organization as well to help keep staff in the building limited. In addition to my work, I was involved in many outreach events and made sure the staff had everything they needed. Examples include GMHC’s world famous annual Latex Ball, Harlem Pride and multiple other events each month.
