About Nicholai Joaquin

Drawing on 16 years of leadership across non-profit organizations, performing arts institutions, and creative platforms, Nicholai seeks to transform the art and business of storytelling. In 2021, he was appointed Chief of Staff to the CEO at the Pop Culture Collaborative, where he guides strategy on cross-departmental collaborations, philanthropic partnerships, and field resourcing.Prior to joining the Collaborative, Nicholai established a career as a creative producer. During his rise through The New York Pops–which culminated with a promotion to Director of Artistic Operations in 2014–he mounted performances across New York City’s most iconic venues, including Carnegie Hall, Central Park, and Yankee Stadium. He developed collaborations with Queen Latifah, Cyndi Lauper, Angela Lansbury, Sara Bareilles, Carly Rae Jepsen, Idina Menzel, Martin Short, Darren Criss, Lea Salonga, Renée Fleming, Jenifer Lewis, Alex Newell, Alan Menken, and The Muppets, among others. He cultivated corporate sponsors to provide free community concerts and learning experiences for thousands of New Yorkers. He also launched an Ambassadors Program, where hundreds of students were mentored by Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award-winning artists. At the onset of the COVID pandemic, Nicholai branched into digital storytelling. In 2020, he was named COO at Just Human Productions, a multimedia journalism platform that investigates solutions to public health crises through the lens of social justice.     The Pop Culture Collaborative is a collaborative fund working to transform the narrative oceans harming Black and Indigenous peoples, people of color, immigrants and refugees, and religiously diverse peoples—especially those who are women, queer, transgender, gender expansive, and/or disabled—by forging partnerships between social justice movements and the entertainment, advertising, and media industries.As a key member of the Collaborative's development team, I advise on pathways to expand the organization's donor base, securing $27M in philanthropic support to date. To advance the Collaborative's culture change strategy, I curate external programming in partnership with entertainment institutions including the Sundance Film Festival, ESSENCE Festival of Culture, and the Apollo's Arts & Ideas Festival. I project manage all cross-organizational initiatives; most recently I served as executive producer of the first-ever Becoming America Gathering, which convened the Collaborative's entire "Narrative Content" grantmaking portfolio for a two-day learning immersion at ARRAY Creative Campus (headquarters for Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernay). In support of the Collaborative's "Truth Seekers" grantmaking portfolio, I co-launched the STEWARDS: a council of artists, entertainers, and creators who believe in the power of understanding the shared history of our nation.
