It is often posited that architecture owes its genesis to the textile arts. Not only does the practice of weaving elicit a strong metaphor for the layering of architectural elements, but woven surfaces are often cited as the earliest of building materials used by our ancestors. Following this thread, these two disciplines are inextricably linked, but their contemporary practices have deviated from each other significantly. Today, both industries operate at different scales, but together make up a significant portion of society’s destructive potential towards our planet’s capacity for life as we know it. The inherent wastefulness and reliance on energy intensive processes required to accommodate the pace of the market is ultimately to blame. This collaboration between an architectural designer and fashion designer will generate a collision of scale to produce a speculative installation that explores and instantiates the topics of craft, temporality and interdisciplinarity through the re-imagining of one of antiquity's most iconic machines: the warp-weighted loom.
