At Labs Mart my position as Lab Tech had me testing pharmaceutical samples, nutritional supplements and raw and processed food samples using a variety of tests utilising uv-vis spectroscopy, manual titrations, and other physical/chemical wet chemistry testing. (Was responsible for 50+ tests for Labs-Mart).My responsibilities in the lab included, performing wet chemistry assays according to client, FCC and USP methods and being an active member of our JHSC. My main test was running all protein analyses for the lab using a FOSS Kjeltec protein nitrogen analyser. My side responsibilities include collaborating with staff in our JHSC every month to implement new strategies and ideas on how to make our work place safe for all, and to reach target safety goals by advocating higher safety practices in the lab and remove any hazards as well to be sure to follow up on all safety “near hit” hazard reports made by employees. I also prepared standards and reagents for use in day-to-day testing, performing verification on balances and pipettes monthly, and maintaining a well-documented logbook.

My position at CanmetEnergy was first a 90-day casual full-time job as an Analytical Technician testing physical properties on bitumen, bio-oils, and other various petroleum-based samples. After being trained and supervised I worked Independently, tabulated my data on Excel and LIMs and reported my work to my supervisor for peer review. My main duties required me to run physical tests on bitumen samples that were either from the pilot plants or scientists doing research in the facility. These physical tests followed SOPs that are loosely based on ASTM methods. These methods included ASTM4530, 4870, 4377, 4807, 6560, 3279, and in-house methods. During this position I also had duties such as plotting backlogged and daily data into excel to provide QA and QC charts, uploaded data for research using LIMS and GCDocs, updated and authored in-house method SOPs loosely based from ASTM methods, provided assistance in assembling pilot plant distillation apparatuses', and maintained a workstation.

At Bureau Veritas I took on the role as a Lab Technician where I prepared and extracted various kinds of soil, water and tailing samples ranging from 72-96 samples a day to analyze for PAH’s (polyaromatic hydrocarbons) for oil contamination using gas chromatography instrumentation. I was certified for on-site refinery sampling training for the Imperial Oil refinery in Strathcona, Edmonton, AB. Which this required to take a driving course for the company to drive the work truck so I could sample around the refinery collecting water effluent from various sections of the plant. I am also familiar with safe work permits and working with refinery operators. Side responsibilities also included disposing expired samples from storage, assist other groups with sample prep, cleaning and maintaining a lab, and participate in weekly safety meetings as an ongoing safety culture at Bureau Veritas.
