I've been passionate about construction for 20 years and it started in 1999 when I worked for roughly a year as an apprentice union ironworker. I worked on the small team called the rigging crew. We would tie rigging cables around metal structures we pre-assembled on the ground, then using hand signals we would communicate to the crane operators where we wanted the metal pieces, then they would be caught by the other half of our crew awaiting up in the air, having walked 6" Wide I-beams and climbed the top of the structure. They would grab the pieces and pull them in to attach them to the existing skeletal structure using spud wrenches to align then and a couple bolts at each end to hold the massive hunks of metal in place. Constructing a soda ash plant near Parachute, CO. in the Rocky Mountains gave me a taste for what big construction jobs were like, but as much as I enjoyed it, I still felt like something was missing, so as the job neared completion I realized that I was ready to try new things. I started working for a general contracting company Called Big Sky Construction out of Grand Junction, CO. where I worked on commercial and residential jobs with a master carpenter doing various interior and exterior work. One day I'd be installing a deck or a porch the next I'd be installing new cabinets and baseboard, a few days later I'd be leveling old floors and replicating millwork from the previous century. I loved working with my hands, problem solving and the constantly changing environments... but as a young man I wanted to see more.One day while working at a school somewhere in the Rockies I decided it was time to go. I finished installing a cubbie that would one day house the backpack and belongings for a fourth-grader, and told the master carpenter a friend with whom I had worked with for years who had taught me about precision and Craftsmanship that I was moving, and away I went.I landed in Fort Collins Colorado where I found two jobs on the same day. The first one I worked 40 hours a week at on Mon-Fri was for a large contracting company that was building roughly 400 homes that surrounded a partial golf course they had constructed also. The second job was 30-38 hours a week Monday-Sunday was for a small business owner who had an asphalt maintenance and repair business that would fix potholes, seal-coating parking lots and driveways, paint parking lot stripes, symbols and lettering. After around a year the winds changed and so did my location.I landed in Michigan renovating rentals and helping flip houses...
