I design, construct, and test novel "vine-like" robots for use in eldercare. I work to implement and refine new technologies for both soft and rigid vine-like robots to assist in safely and efficiently harnessing and lifting humans (e.g. out of bed and into a wheelchair). Day-to-day tasks include: implementing the engineering design process by collaborating to brainstorm mechanical solutions to physical problems; using SolidWorks 3D computer-aided design to model and test the properties of various mechanisms; 3D printing prototypes on a MarkForged, StrataSys, or Ender 3D printer; manufacturing (waterjet cutting, milling, etc.) parts in MIT's Light Manufacturing and Production workshop. I worked to construct a modular jet pump propulsion system to physically verify the efficacy of various cargo ship hulls designed by AI. I used SolidWorks computer-aided design to model the mechanism, 3D printed parts using FormLabs resin 3D printing, constructed the containment vessel from water-tight lasercut acrylic, and wired electrical systems in order to wirelessly control the jet pump’s impeller. This jet pump was to be placed in a ~2m model boat designed by my supervisor’s genetic algorithm (optimizing for conflicting variables such as increasing ship speed and cargo capacity) and run on the Charles River. I also learned how to apply machine learning algorithms such as NGSA-II for intended application in creating an AI-optimized jet pump. Show less
