Beam Robotics focused on creating hardware and software to help automate infrastructure inspection tasks. We built sensor kits for robots or handheld rigs to 3D map infrastructure assets using state-of-the-art SLAM software built from the ground up. We then used computer vision and machine learning for automatically detecting and accurately quantifying defects of interest to inspectors such as cracks, spalls, and delaminations in concrete. We had active collaborations with local robotics companies, parking garage inspectors, municipal bridge inspectors, and various infrastructure asset owners. We were also receipients of the 5G ENCQOR Demonstration Program by the Ontario Centres of Excellence.As a co-founder and CEO, I worked on a wide range of tasks including staff management, planning, networking, sales, and grant writing. I also built a large majority of the tech stack that the company was founded on, build over many years as a graduate student at the University of Waterloo.
