About Nicholas Clysdale

I love color. I love cohesive design. I love seeing a brand with their message delivered clearly across all forms of media. When I see a company with a message that’s a little cloudy, I want to help it. Not forcing but with care using my knowledge of print, print medias and digital color formulation learned along the way, beginning in the Graphic Communications major at UW Stout, to help deliver that message in the best way while hopefully educating the company along the way for their future success. With my start in pre press I use my problem solving skills each day to find the best way forward. My new role then builds on that, and helps me further my ability to help clients get to their design goals for a project. Outside of the print industry, I love the beauty of a four wheeled machine. Specifically its design and, you guessed it, its use of color inside and out. It’s been fun watching the auto industry shift to sustainable materials that still bring the same senses to the user as traditional woods and metal materials have for so many years. My dream is to meld these two worlds and be able to bring cohesive design, use of creative but purposeful color, along with environmentally friendly practices to a range of products and an overall brand. Until that opportunity presents itself, I am thoroughly enjoying my time in the print industry, most notably the people in it! I look forward to seeing how our industry changes and adapts to the future’s needs.

Color Manager | Prepress Operator

Current

St Paul, Minnesota, United States

I assist in the management of color control and consistency mainly across our digital presses both UV and latex ink based. I now have experience working with Onyx, Colorgate, and EFI Firey RIP programs working in this position. I also advise our lithographic and screen printing team’s color needs with the help of our color lead when needed. We maintain and calibrate our Epson proofers both onsite as well as nationwide for our affiliate companies. Working with well known clients both locally and internationally know is what motivates me to be my best in this role and absorb any and all knowledge from my lead who built this system. With this title also come waves of questions from CSRs and others within the company asking about their client’s art and how it can be produced and on what press for most efficient, best results. I’ve enjoyed fielding these questions and giving direction where I can. The best days are when we match a color to a provided sample that didn’t seem possible. I also help our pre-press team in more of a quality control / proofing role at this stage, ensuring color is used correctly and art is “built for print”. I am taking on more imposing work too, setting up print ready files for our digital presses. Being able to work a piece from inception to physically monitoring it as it prints on press has become a rewarding experience. I utilize Esko’s print production software (Pilot, Color Pilot, Esko Deskpak) on a daily basis as well as Adobe’s Illustrator & Photoshop for file editing and color sample creation.

Mar 2023 - Present

Desktop Technician / Prepress

St. Paul Mn

Worked as an intern in the summer of 2018 before graduating from Stout and earning a full time position with the company the following January. I prepared various customer files for offset, flexographic and digital print production for the packaging and label industry. I worked using Esko's ArtPro software as well as their Pilot software to interact with other plants and facilities nationwide. I also utilized Adobe’s Photoshop and Illustrator programs on a daily basis to adjust art and at times create solutions to better the customers I worked with. I worked with our Epson proofers to make color correction decisions as well. I mostly enjoyed working with our customer’s brands and making sure their “look” was consistent on every substrate and process they put it through. I also enjoyed how the work was different each day, and how I had the opportunity to troubleshoot it either alone or with a strong team with me working towards the same goal of delivering quality to our customers.

Jun 2018 - Mar 2023

Parts Counter Attendent/ Floor Salesman

Bob'S Cylce Supply

St. Paul, Minnesota

I had worked at Bob's Cycle Supply over the past summers and also over winter breaks. I would fit customers to helmets and other protective gear as well as take special orders for specific parts for on-road and off road motorcycles, as well as snowmobiles in the winter. I also would provide helpful information on the products to customers to make sure they get exactly what they need or as close as I can do for them. My time there helped me immensely with my interpersonal skills and how to interact with people.

Feb 2012 - Jan 2018

Finishing Department

Savage, Mn

I worked in the finishing department packing or kitting labels for shipping. I ran a shrink wrap bagging machine and shrink sleeve cutter for a short time. I also would sometimes spot print defects before shipping/delivery with my background in the industry from my schooling. The work was very repetitive, but because of that it made me detail oriented and made me see how each part of the press room's floor affected the next step down the stream.

Jun 2017 - Aug 2017

Summer Intern

Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area

This was my first taste of working in a printing company. I had just taken the intro course for my major coming in so I wasn't sure how much I would help. I ended up learning a ton about the printing industry and how a full-scale place like that works. I would follow a job from the CSR's desk to job planning, to design, to its press at production and then onto post-production where I would sometimes assist in kitting, and assembly/bindery of booklets and other products. I assisted mostly in job planning where they set me up with my own workstation to set up simple business card re orders and things like that. I also helped out in their type department (design team), my first taste of prepress work on products. I got to work with interesting customers, both local and nationwide and got to work with hard-working and passionate people in a fun work environment.

Jun 2016 - Aug 2016

Co Founder

Celly Hard Apparel

St. Paul, Minnesota

My friend and I stated this online enterprise in our senior year of high school. Celly Hard Apparel is a hockey lifestyle and team apparel company. We designed our own t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and hockey jerseys. We would release a line of clothing every season as well as take custom orders for hockey teams' apparel. We built our own website using Wix.com. where we would not only sell our stuff but also try to interact with the hockey community.Unfortunately I had to leave the company to focus on my studies. It was a lot of fun and a huge learning experience and a lot of what I learned I could directly apply to my studies and vice versa. I would be fun to get back into it now that I have graduated but I can see now after my schooling that I would take a more designer's approach to it rather than running the whole show.
