My research in the Rotavera Group focuses on developing fundamental insight on the chemical kinetics of linear and cyclic ethers, which are important as intermediates in the low-temperature combustion of hydrocarbons and as promising biofuel candidates. I am working to elucidate reaction mechanisms for these species using steady-state speciation experiments in a jet-stirred reactor and synchrotron photoionization mass spectrometry at the Advanced Light Source. I have also been using various codes to automatically develop detailed chemical kinetic mechanisms for ethers.

Greater Chicago Area

I performed ab initio electronic structure and rate coefficient calculations within the automated workflow of AutoMech to study reaction mechanisms of cyclic ether radicals. This work was performed while visiting Dr. Stephen Klippenstein's group and was supported by a DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Award.

Greater Grand Rapids, Michigan Area

I developed catalytic mechanisms for mid- to late- transition metal carbene complexes with quantum mechanical calculations. This included extensive transition state searches, electronic structure analysis, and comparisons to experimental data. My advisor was Dr. Richard Lord in the Department of Chemistry.

I researched mechanisms for the degradation of redox mediators in lithium-oxygen batteries under the supervision of Dr. Cong Liu using density functional theory methods. This work was performed during a DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship.
