I was elected twice as Student Leader of Birkbeck College’s Students’ Union, a role comparable to president for most Students’ Unions. Due to the modest size of the Union, my role covered a wide-array of domains including event organising, content production and governance reform. I was a member of multiple University committees including Health & Safety, Finance & General Purposes and Education Committee. My position on these committees, alongside consultation with students, gave me extensive experience of advocating on behalf of students.However, my primary campaign was to introduce a 24-hour Library. This was a research led campaign which surveyed over 300 students. It demonstrated that emerging student groups at Birkbeck had a significantly higher interest in a 24 hour opening. I presented this evidence to Birkbeck’s education committee and successfully secured funding for the library to open overnight in the 2019 May-June exam period.

As Chair of Trustees (2017-2018) it was my role to ensure that the Union remained in-line with its mission statement and strategic aims. This involved being familiar with the legal, financial and political challenges faced by both the union and the sector. I led on a 3-year strategic plan to reform the Students’ Union - ‘Getting out of neutral’.

This provided me with a wealth of experience with the issues facing Universities today and how to navigate these national issues effectively.
