About Nicholas Lagana

Beyond being a recent mechanical engineering graduate from California Baptist University, I am a hard working, creative individual who continuously strives to increase my engineering experience. As a three year member of the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) team, I have been able to apply and expand the knowledge that I have attained in class to a real project scenario. To further increase this hands-on experience, I completed a 6-month internship at Collins Aerospace, where I was integrated into a team working to develop the next uses of thermoplastics in aerospace. As my senior capstone project, I worked with a small team to develop a child safety device that went on to win a start-up business competition. I have been able to do in-depth technical research and utilize several design tools, such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Microsoft Excel to determine the best possible designs. In addition, I have been able to learn and practice several manufacturing processes, including plasma cutting, welding (MIG and TIG), 3D printing, drilling, cutting, and bending. At my internship, I got a lot of experience working with PLCs and different robotic equipment such as an AFP. The most important thing I've learned from all of these experiences is the importance of collaborating with other members. Between making critical engineering decisions and participating in several small leadership roles, I was able to develop my personal skills and see how they fit in perfectly with each of the teams I was a part of. I plan to continue mastering these skills at an entry level mechanical engineering position.

  • California Baptist University
Egr344 Materials And Manufacturing Teacher'S Assistant
California Baptist University Sep 2023 - Dec 2023
    Riverside, California, United States
For the course EGR344 Materials and Manufacturing at California Baptist University, I assist the professor with weekly tasks for the course. I grade student homework and lab assignments as they turn them in each week. Every couple of weeks, I meet with the professor to discuss student performance on assignments and planning. Occasionally, I have assisted with lab materials preparation.
  • Collins Aerospace
    Research And Technology Engineering Co-Op
    Collins Aerospace Jan 2023 - Jun 2023
    Riverside, California, United States
My internship experience at Collins Aerospace gave me the opportunity to experience an engineering environment full of composite manufacturing, project design and development, and team collaboration. For this role, I had the opportunity to work with experienced engineers and technicians on developing thermoplastic composite materials for future use in aerospace parts. Through this role, I became very familiar with thermoplastic and thermoset composites and gained experience in material analysis. Using the standard practices the team developed, I manufactured thermoplastic composite parts of different sizes, layup configurations, and shapes. This included methods such as hand layup, oven consolidation, and press consolidation. For each composite part, I documented my process and communicated with the project's lead engineer. This included collaboration with my team, other personnel at the company, and even outside personnel from organizations such as NASA. With a senior technician on the team, I repaired and operated an Automatic Tape Layer (ATL) machine, which helped maximize the throughput of composite parts. I assisted senior engineers with more advanced machinery, such as the Automatic Fiber Placement (AFP) machine. After becoming more experienced with the processes, I improved and documented new standards of work for several common procedures. My largest project included finding a procedure to improve part quality without compromising throughput or resources. For this project, I created and executed a Design of Experiment (DOE) that successfully met the set goal. Other projects I worked on include induction welding testing and the layup of standard, in-production parts using thermoset composite material. In addition, I also assisted in organizing and documenting material inventory, participated in daily meetings, helped with project prioritization and organization, and was involved in weekly building organization and cleaning.
  • City Of Huntington Beach
    Ocean Lifeguard I/Junior Lifeguard Instructor
City Of Huntington Beach Feb 2018 - Jun 2023
    Huntington Beach, California, United States
As an Ocean Lifeguard I for the City of Huntington Beach, I have the opportunity to work with an incredible team to maintain beach safety at one of the busiest beaches in the nation. Since I started at the age of 16, I have had the opportunity to perform about 50 major rescues, over 6500 preventative actions, and around 100 medical aids. As a tower guard, I have used many important skills such as collaboration, visual awareness, and running and swimming abilities to make rescues and prevent all potential drownings in the ocean in my area. Through using the emergency medical skills learned in my EMT class, I have performed many different medical aids on beach patrons, such as stingray stings, major cuts, spinal injuries, and CPR. As of 2020, I gained the additional title of Junior Lifeguard Instructor, where for 8 weeks during the summer I work with the Junior Lifeguard program. With about 1500 students each summer, I am able to teach a large portion of the children in our community about basic medical skills and beach and ocean safety. As an Instructor, I design daily lesson plans, collaborate with a team of other instructors, coach physical events, lead lectures, create new activities, and work closely with a group of 40 students during a morning and afternoon session. As a fifth year lifeguard, I am a part of the mentorship team, guiding and teaching new instructors and lifeguards as they come into the program. This lets me work with certain new hires to answer their questions outside of work and pick up leadership shifts that require more experience on the ATV or in the lifeguard truck.
  • California Baptist University
