Following secondary education at Westminster School, I studied architecture at the Architectural Association (London). This course stimulated my interest in town planning, which I found more exciting than architecture. Resolving to become a planner, I took a Master of Science degree in urban and regional planning at the University of Strathclyde, (Glasgow) where I was awarded a prize as top student for the year.I worked as Senior Planning Officer and Principal Planning Officer at the London Borough of Hillingdon before landing a job as Lecturer in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Melbourne (Australia). I published many international journal articles, books and book chapters on planning, environmental politics and social justice, rising to the rank of professor.I have always had a strong concern for social justice. I discovered recently that my great-grandfather Frederick Low, MP for Norwich (UK), was a member of Asquith's Liberal government that first introduced a progressive, graduated income tax, and removed the power of the House of Lords over economic policy.My most recent books are 'Being a Planner in Society, For People, Planet, Place' (Edward Elgar, 2020), and 'Social Transformation for Climate Change, A New Framework for Democracy' (Routledge 2024)
