Lead System Engineer (Vp Engineering)Walden Local Meat Co. Jan 2019 - Feb 2023Tewksbury, Ma, UsI was hired in 2019 to jumpstart an engineering program and build a data-driven framework for back of house operations. In my first year, I designed a fulfillment system to replace the manual, paper-based workflow the operations team used for packing shares and introduced a SQL-based data analytics platform. In early 2020 I assumed a VP-level role, reporting to the CEO. This is a strategic role that dictates the Operating Plan each year including key initiatives, performance targets, staffing and budget. My management responsibilities include software development, e-commerce platform management, operations support, data analytics, IT infrastructure, team leadership, and advisement for the CEO and Board of DirectorsKey contributions: - Designed a software and hardware system to systematize the company’s proprietary packing algorithms into a digital workflow. This system enabled the operations team to scale throughput by 2.5x with flat growth for support staff, and tighter cost controls - Engaged a software consultant to refactor Walden’s technical stack. Prior to this work web development was slow, complex, and the high risk of user disruption stymied product development. The refactored application has enabled rapid, parallel path development able to meet the needs of the organization - Led structure and technology changes through COVID-19 response periods to restructure subscription program and operations workflows with minimal disruption to the subscription member base - Led technical diligence and operation design for the acquisition of a cold storage business located in a 34,000 sq ft facility. Modeled existing processes and led modernization and migration of information systems to a modern web-based application - Built the infrastructure to support data-driven decision making by designing and provisioning a data warehouse, business intelligence layer, developing reports, and training employees to use SQL languages -
Systems Engineering LeadFormlabs Jan 2016 - Jan 2019Somerville, Ma, UsI built and led a new team focused on introducing continuous engineering principles to the product development team by collaborating with engineering subdisciplines (mechanical, electrical, embedded) to integrate and validate new features into current and future products. As a team lead, I was also responsible for roadmap development and implementation and a member of the senior staff reporting to the Director of Engineering.Key contributions: - Developed Form 2 factory calibration algorithms and software. Spent 6 weeks with contract manufacturer in the EU in a NPI role training suppliers and optimizing assembly and calibration line workflows - Created system architecture and technical specifications for the FormCell, Formlabs' automation solution for printing and post processing parts off of multiple printer and wash units - Designed and validated a homographic technique for updating laser pointing calibrations while printing - Designed UI / UX workflows for print preparation and issue resolution - Built an issue tracking and triage system for tracking hardware and software failures, started a training program for technical tier customer service agents - Recruited and mentored several engineers who have become key leaders in the organization -
R&D EngineerFormlabs Feb 2014 - Jan 2016Somerville, Ma, UsOriginally an intern on the Print Process team, I gradually shifted focus from modeling and improving printer dynamics to managing the integration and testing of bleeding edge features for new products. Some of the responsibilities I held over this time include root causing printer failure modes, scheduling development and validation for embedded firmware changes, developing procedures for drop testing and certifications, and overseeing lifetime and DVT testing. -
Optics And Photonics Research AssociateSwarthmore College Aug 2013 - Dec 2013Swarthmore, Pa, UsPrincipal Investigator in the Optics and Photonics lab. I explored novel applications for custom optical fibers. Some of my contributions include:• Developing capability to handle and utilize four-core fibers for the lab • Demonstrating a novel strain-based method for measuring twist angles of a bent four-core fiber• Developing a testing platform for future research in high-temperature interferometric sensing and phase-step profilometry utilizing orthogonal interference patternsI presented my findings on fiber optics sensors at an OSA Workshop for Specialty Optical Fibers in Sigtuna, Sweden. (See Publications below) -
Engineering InternMonterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute Jun 2013 - Aug 2013Moss Landing, Ca, UsI interned as a systems engineer in MBARI's Chemical Sensors Lab, focused on improving UCSD's Argo project. The keystone of Argo is a low cost free floating depth profiling sensor platform; currently 3900 of these floats provide near real-time distributed data about oceanographic conditions globally. Our goal was to improve the float's buoyancy control system to enable deployments in shallow coastlines. I designed a pressure simulator used to characterize buoyancy engine controllers. The primary feature of my tool was a pressure vessel hydraulically coupled to a spring loaded piston, which simulates the linear relationship between depth and pressure. Responsibilities and Achievements:• Designed a pressure chamber rated to 700 psi, including CAD + FEA (Solidworks), including generation of mechanical drawings• Assembled and validated all aspects of the system including hydraulic circuits, sensor systems, pump controllers and linear actuators• Implemented a Labview controller and use it to characterize the volumetric efficiency as a function of pressure• Designed and conducted parameter estimation experiments -
Signal Processing AnalystOptasense Inc Jun 2012 - Aug 2012Roanoke, Virginia, UsOptaSense provides a turn-key product that turns buried optical fibers into a distributed acoustic wavefront detector. At a high level, the sensor works by reading the backscattered frequency content of pulses sent from one ened of the fiber. If the fiber position is well understood, the resulting data can be used for anything from leak detection in pipes to gunshot locatlization. However, not all customers know the exact position of their fiber in the ground. I worked as a Signal Processing Engineer to prototype a calibration procedure to precisely locate sensing nodes along the fiber. Over the course of my internship I:• Worked from first principles to brainstorm calibration techniques, and built a Matlab model performance• Prototyped signal processing strategies and data processing scripts to integrate field data into my system model• Traveled to a customer location to test my final calibration strategy• Coordinated with third party consultants to survey the customer site and accurately determine the position of the entire fiber• Validated the efficacy of my calibration technique and handed off a standalone SOP for fiber calibration -
