As a candidate for the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, I am dedicated to the career I see myself in. My passion is to advocate for patient education and strive for improvement of the patient care process through whichever field I see myself in. This can be attained through my background in health science and affiliation with different school organizations. Obtaining my bachelor’s in health science from the University of Central Florida has helped lay a foundation that is essential for helping me learn throughout pharmacy school. The classes that I took during my undergraduate years of college gave me insight and more details on diseases and various topics that helped me grasp concepts more easily. As I progressed through the curriculum, my passion for drug development and personalized medicine blossomed. By participating in the VIP case competitions provided by the Industry Pharmacists Organization (IPho), I was able to understand some of the aspects needed before the drug can enter clinical trials. A factor that was included was that of pharmacogenomics as some patients using medication need it to be tailored to them individually. By joining the Student Personalized Medical Coalition (sPMC), I was able to learn more about how pharmacogenomics is a growing field and has been adapted to medical practice when health practitioners prescribe medications to patients. I have taken up the role of Treasurer for the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) and Director of Finance for sPMC. As it displays leadership, it helps advocate improvement in the patient care process in critical care settings. In community pharmacy, the pharmacist serves as a first line between patients and healthcare professionals as they can communicate with the patient to see if they have any health issues. In this organization, some opportunities allow students to interact with patients in underserved areas such as health screenings.
