As Assistant Coordinator, I led a team of educators throughout the week, ensuring both staff and children were fully supported in their activities. I was responsible for planning and executing public excursions for groups of more than 50 children, managing logistics and ensuring a safe and enriching experience. Additionally, I oversaw supervision placements and activity management, creating opportunities for children’s development while allowing educators to enhance their skills in a safe, supportive envrionment.My approach to education was (and is) guided by the Reggio Emilia methodology, emphasizing child-led learning and enquiry through exploratory talk. I also incorporated Vygotsky’s social constructivism, prioritizing social interaction as a critical element of the learning process, Bruner’s discovery learning, which promoted a concept-based learning methodology, and the Socratic Method, which encourages children to explore various ideas and concepts in their way through open-ended questioning. For my Honours project, I researched the plant protein Acetohydroxyacid Synthase (AHAS) in the Guddat research lab, focusing on protein expression and purification for structural analysis. I utilized recombinant DNA technology to express AHAS in E. coli, employing various purification techniques such as affinity chromatography and size-exclusion chromatography to isolate the protein for study.My results indicated that specific residues in the intra-subunit connections of the plant protein played significant roles in regulating enzymatic activity. Notably, I discovered that a particular mutation could greatly enhance the enzyme's activity. This finding suggested potential pathways for improving enzymatic efficiency, which could have important implications in agricultural biotechnology and metabolic engineering.This project not only sharpened my technical skills in molecular biology but also deepened my understanding of protein dynamics and their functional roles in metabolic pathways. Collaborating with lab members allowed me to engage in meaningful discussions that enriched the overall research experience.
