About Nicholas Outa

I am a PhD scholar and part-time lecturer in Fisheries and Aquaculture at Maseno University in Kenya. With a deep understanding of the fisheries and aquaculture sector, I train and mentor many smallholder fish farmers on various aspects of fish farming as a business. I am a super-trainer and have developed several farmers' training materials, especially for Farmer Field School (FFS) training. With a Master of Science degree in Limnology and Wetland Management from UNESCO-IHE, BOKU University, and Egerton University, and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Aquatic Science from Egerton University, I possess a strong background in aquatic sciences and experience in Fisheries and Aquaculture.I have published over 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of aquatic sciences focusing on fisheries and aquaculture. I am also a Research Capacity Advisor on Scientific Writing and Communication at the Training Centre in Communication (TCC-Africa), a mentor for early career researchers at Eider Africa, and the founder of WritingHub Africa. Through WritingHub Africa, I provide training and mentorship on scientific writing and publishing, data analysis, and grant proposal writing. As the head of Moderation and Curation at AfricArXiv and a reviewer for several scientific journals, including Frontiers in Aquatic Foods, the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development, and Lakes and Reservoirs Journal, I strive to promote Open Science and collaboration within the scientific community. I am also an Academic Editor at PloS One.Besides, my research on Multi-loop Aquaponic systems for water and nutrient efficiency in food production in peri-urban communities in Kenya, I co-founded Dala Integrated Aquaculture Hub to empower women and youth in food production and enhance food and nutrition security among smallholder farmers in rural Kenya. The hub provides training on various climate-smart food systems for enhanced food sovereignty, advocates for policy change, and provides linkages that enable agroecology-based production and consumption. As a passionate and accomplished scientist, writer, and mentor, I am always seeking new opportunities for collaboration and consulting.
