I focus on experimental design and research methods applied in developing country contexts. I have managed projects to tease out the effect of stress on ethnic bias in Kenya, to encourage community participation in Uganda, to increase mobile money savings in Tanzania, and to increase interest-free loan disbursement and repayment in Nigeria. I was the primary researcher and a research assistant in two projects in the Western Cape Government's Behavioural Change programme. Parental Messaging: Primary Researcher:I designed, rolled out and analysed a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to test the impact of parental SMS communication on learner afterschool attendance in a sample of low-income schools. In this role, I designed and implemented data collection methods, managed research assistants, and regularly engaged multiple stakeholders in government, university, and the NGO and school sectors.MOD Centre Learner Outcomes: Primary ResearcherI was also the primary researcher tasked with determining the impact of the MOD afterschool programme on learner outcomes. I collaborated with several government departments, collected and organised several large and messy datasets, and applied sophisticated data analysis techniques to figuring out if attending MOD in fact caused learners to do better in school. I produced a report on the narrative and policy shifts in Black Economic Empowerment policy in South Africa, with a particular focus on the evolving role of key business and political figures between 1996 and 2015. This formed part of HUMA’s Business-State Relations project.

I was one of two assistant managers on GAP, a project designed to pair graduates with small businesses and prepare them for their specific needs. In 9 months, I helped raise the number of project participants from 200 to 6500, and developed communication and data management systems to cope with these high volumes. I was chiefly responsible for the project’s data management and website, but also conducted research, and created written content for the project’s marketing and media.

I assisted the audit team with the audits of several trusts, NGOs and companies.
