My graduate research focused on the biochemical characterization of functional RNA-protein interactions. I was particularly interested by transcription factors and RNA accommodation at the DNA-binding interface. I performed a comprehensive in vitro binding study through direct binding, NMR, and RNA and protein mutagenesis to determine that the glucocorticoid receptor DNA-binding domain is a robust structure-specific RNA-binding domain.

My undergraduate research in the Taatjes Lab focused on the Mediator complex, a fundamental component of activated gene expression. Mediator is modulated by direct interaction with transcriptional activators such as p65, an NF-κB family protein. I worked to purify the p65-Mediator complex in vitro to identify cofactors of the complex by mass spectrometry.

I worked for the Taatjes Lab to maintain a 24 L HeLa cell suspension culture for purification of nuclear extract. My responsibilities were daily maintenance through sterile technique, cell harvest, and nuclei isolation.
