Nicholas Pinter is the Roy J. Shlemon Professor of Applied Geosciences and Associate Director of the Center for Watershed Sciences at University of California Davis. He is an expert in earth-surface processes, including flooding, river systems, hydrology, and natural hazards assessment. In over 20 years of professional experience, Prof. Pinter has worked on a wide variety of research projects and professional consultantships. He is the author of several geoscience books and has been the recipient of a number of awards, including from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Charles A. Lindbergh Foundation, and recently from the European Commission (Marie Curie Fellowship).Prof. Pinter has current research projects across North America, South America, and Europe. He and his students are working in the western United States, in the California coastal region. He is the leader of two National Science Foundation-funded projects analyzing flooding and flow dynamics on over 5000 km of the Mississippi River and its major tributaries. He also has projects in the Rhine, Danube, and other basins in Europe.Prof. Pinter is a Licensed Professional Geologist. He has consulted and provided litigation support and expert-witness testimony for a range of projects, issues, and cases. He has testified in U.S. Federal Court (St. Louis) on the effects of levees and levee construction upon river dynamics and flood frequencies, including detailed testimony regarding the limitations of different varieties of hydraulic models. He provided litigation support and analysis for other cases in U.S. Federal Court (including Kansas City, MO and Charleston, WV) involving river dynamics, flooding, bank stability, and levee failure and damage.
