About Nicholas Vamvakas

A senior financial markets executive with 40 years of broad and proven experience in strategically building, from the ground up, successful and growing banking, funds management and superannuation fund businesses.LeadershipSuccessfully managed large and rapidly growing teams through times of significant change and turbulence. This was evidenced both at ME Bank through the GFC and at Equip through mergers, rapid growth and the Royal Commission. Building a team from the ground up to focus on Strategy and Growth at Cbus was the most recent exampleSuperannuation Led some of the largest superannuation mergers in the past 20 years. This involved the negotiation and integration of the Rio Tinto Staff Superannuation Fund with Equip growing the business from $8B in funds under management and 50,000 members to $16B in funds under management and 75,000 members. More recently I was responsible for leading and implementing the mergers of Media Super and EISS Super into Cbus adding a total of 100,000 new members and $14 billion in Funds under management.Banking License Managed the team at Members Equity, which applied and obtained an authority from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) to act as an approved deposit taking institution and use the word Bank. This is one of the few banking licences approved by APRA to a new entity in the past 30 years. RiskAchieved a reduction from APRA for the minimum levels of both capital and liquidity required by ME Bank. Obtained a rating upgrade from Standard and Poor’s and a first-time rating from Moody’s which significantly reduced the cost of funding to the Bank adding directly to net profit.Balance Sheet RestructuringNavigated the global financial crisis and subsequent organisational and structural changes imposed on ME Bank (as Acting CEO and CFO). Responsible for transitioning the Bank from $20 billion in off balance sheet funding to on balance sheetThe teams I led at Equip and Cbus were successful in a range of successor fund transfers through open tenders. Dow Chemical, Wellington, dnata, Brookfield (Multiplex) and Weploy were amongst the successful tenders. Portfolio Management
