I lead a research group dedicated to understanding how viral proteins manipulate cell signaling. Our overall goal is to use this knowledge to: (i) understand how cell maintain the fidelity of their genomes. (ii) identify mechanisms of resistance to geno-toxic chemotherapeutic (e.g. cisplatin) (iii) develop strategies for overcoming said resistance (iv) and to evaluate the oncogenic potential of viruses. I am always eager to collaborate with groups in the academic or industrial setting and strive to be recognized for my passion, creativity, and dedication to teamwork.

As a member of Denise Galloway's lab, I focused on the link between beta HPV infections and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) development. Epidemiological evidence suggests that certain beta HPV may act transiently to promote NMSC, but are found only in low levels in tumors and thus unnecessary for tumor maintenance. One potential explanation for the relationship between beta HPV infections and NMSC is that certain viral proteins are capable of magnifying the carcinogenic potential of UV exposure. My work primarily focuses on the ability of certain beta HPV E6 proteins to disrupt DNA damage repair processes and as a result make DNA damage resulting from UV exposure more carcinogenic.

As a graduate student in Prescott Deininger's lab, my work focused on deleterious effects of LINE-1 retrotransposon expression. In separate studies, I was able to demonstrate that the link between the DNA damge resulting from LINE-1 expression and cellular toxicity. I demonstrated that the damage associated with LINE-1 expression deminished overall cellular viability by induced not only apoptosis, but also a senescent like state. Additionally, I was able to describe a cellular adaptation to prolonged LINE-1 expression that included a feedback inhibtioin of LINE-1 activity via increased DSB repair kinetics.
