What do you want to be when you grow up? It was a question I would always dodge. I had an idea of what I wanted to do, but I had no idea how to get there. I took many paths along the way, but there was always this voice in the back of my head saying, “do you really want to do this?”My own indecisiveness was my worst enemy. I have always been interested in sports, so shouldn’t I work in the field of athletics? But wait, I always enjoyed writing, so I’m destined to become a journalist. Well hang on now, I love creating videos and other content so shouldn’t I be a film maker? I was lost. I wanted to do everything, but at the same time, I felt like there was no definitive path laid out for me. How do I answer the question of what I want to be when I grow up when I don’t even know who I want to be right now?I arrived at college knowing one thing – I wanted to create, but the question of what I wanted to create remained unanswered. I decided to flip my shortcomings on its head. Rather than being indecisive I was going to answer my own questions. I was going to discover my own passions. I was going to write my own story.I hosted a sports radio show on my college campus and loved it. I took writing classes and discovered that my casual writing passion is something that I enjoyed and longed for as a creative outlet. I crafted videos and podcasts and appreciated the process of creating content for various mediums. In deciding to pursue my variety of interests I learned that it wasn’t about picking one of my many interests and making that a career, but rather finding a field that combines them all. This was my revelation. This was my path, and I was excited to walk it. I decided to enter the world of digital marketing.Digital marketing offers me the opportunity to create content like videos and graphics to help establish brand identity. It gives me the opportunity to write persuasively and creatively. Although it might not always be directly related to sports, I can still consume athletics the same way I have my entire life as a fan. And that is more than alright with me.The question of what I want to be when I grow up no longer scares me. I discovered my path and ultimately found the career I always knew I wanted, but just couldn’t find. The journey of discovering what I wanted to be when I grew older helped me to understand more about who I was. My own indecisiveness led to my desire to blaze my own trail and pursue my multitude of interests – and I couldn’t be happier.
