•Title: Generating sentiment lexica: Evaluating approaches with genetic algorithms & particle swarm optimization.•Description: My research concerned the extraction of sentiment in financial news regarding the US economy and linking changes in news sentiment to movements in financial markets. By collecting a corpus of financial news items and sentiment analysis my goal was to find a relationship between news sentiment and next day market movements.•Achievements: I showed a statistically significant relationship between sentiment in financial news and next day market behavior over a five year period in the DJIA, S&P500 and VIX. Through machine learning I refined legacy lexica resulting in a statistically significant improvement in market predictions. I noted a relationship between the frequency of republished and updated news items and next day market volatility. •Coursework: Financial Informatics, Behavioral finance, Research methods and statistics for researchers. A secondary area of interest is the role of duplicate news items, expansions and re-release which occur on a regular basis. The inclusion of such duplicates in our analysis was highly significant and improved results by a large degree.Further, these duplicates demonstrate changes in the reporting of an event over time and the shift in focus. One specific example identifies an instance where the rise in the price in oil during the course a day, initially the cause is stated as the expectation of growth this is later changed to fears over Iran. The news item later returns to the original version.Another area of research during the course of this phd has been devoted to the examination of political news reporting and the frequency of citations of individual candidates and the potential impact this plays on the election results.
