As a kid, I was always fixing things. If something wasn’t working, I needed to take it apart and find out why and how to make it work. Sometimes I could get it working again and other times it went on fire. I would attribute most of my successes to my intuitive understanding of the way things work in the world. As I grew up, this intuition became a driving force in my life and I was able to apply this to people (minus the dismantling part) and understand what makes them do the things they do. Later, after exploring my passion for cooking and starting a restaurant business in South Africa (my native country), I was able to use this skill in understanding the best way to manage and motivate the employees to effectively run a successful business. It wasn’t always easy as people have conflicting motivations and desires but I was able to create and run a successful business. I decided I was tired of working my weekends away so I sold everything and moved to Spain, where I got a job as an English teacher. I had to further develop my interpersonal skills to be understood by people who can’t speak my language. It was a challenge but dealing with students is way better than dealing with "hangry" restaurant customers and the rewards of watching people grow and develop their skills are very satisfying.Recently, a friend of mine changed careers to data analytics and piqued my interest in the field. The idea of being able to look at human behaviour at such a large scale sounded intriguing so I signed up for a 10-month data bootcamp. I loved the challenge of learning programming in Python and SQL as I’ve always had a keen interest in technology and I can happily say that I am now a fully fledged analyst ready to delve into the world of distribution curves and probabilities and I feel my unusual combination of backgrounds gives me a unique perspective on the field. On a personal side note, I love all things to do with the natural environment, especially the oceans. I’m an avid hiker, gardener and scuba diver and I would love for my work to contribute to the conservation of our natural world in some way.
