Acting as the client-side Project Manager, Nick was responsible for Arup New Zealand's office move, budget and programme from the point a new location was established, through to construction, closure of defects and de-fit of the old office.The NZD $3.5m fit-out, which is in a 120-year-old heritage building, is targeting the ambitious Living Building Challenge certification, which is the next step beyond simply being sustainable and instead focusing on the building being regenerative, positively contributing back to the environment.Nick development of the Request for Proposal for the designers/contractors, undertook reviews of the submissions, completed the fee build up for the project, established the contracts and engaged the various consultants. This role included managing the architects, contractors and suppliers, engaging with local iwi (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei) and coordinating the design with the internal Arup building engineering services disciplines and sustainability team.

Nick was engaged for long-service leave coverage however his contract was extended when it was clear he brought a fresh approach to an otherwise antiquated part of the business. In his short time there, he achieved a redevelopment and streamlining of management systems (including NATA accreditation) within his business unit, to deliver improvements in both efficiency and effectiveness. This was achieved through a strong focus on collaboration with other teams within the division to increase consistency, direct engagement with staff across NSW and active participation in projects such as vehicle ferry overhauls, mechanical bridge upgrades and moveable median upgrades. Achievements included:● Received an exemption from the requirement of SafeWork NSW high risk licences for use of vehicle loading cranes for craning work through consultation with the regulator, research into specific WHS regulations, working with a training provider to develop a bespoke training course (including elements of dogging and craning) and development of internal slinging procedures ● Establishment of an ongoing forum between other division SEQ staff to collaborate, share knowledge and workshop shared issues

Nick worked in the building construction industry for a mechanical engineering firm and was a safety champion for service technicians operating across east coast of Australia and a subcontracted workforce in excess of 100 workers. This position required extensive review of subcontractor’s safety systems, development and delivery of training with project managers and performing site safety audits across many construction sites and liaising with builders to rectify non-conformances and review of subcontractors’ safety management systemsAchievements included:• Developed a pre-start risk assessment tool with branching options and suggested control measures which was integrated into an existing job management tool • Development and delivery of training modules relating to asbestos, work at height, lockout-tagout • Management of multiple lost time injuries with staff returning to work• Responsibility for safety performance on construction projects up to $5m in value with nil serious or notifiable incidents occurring

The first years of Nick’s career were spent working on-site in an Environment, Quality and Safety (EQS) role at a Landfill, Waste Treatment Plant, Composting Platform and Material Recycling Facility. These facilities had significant hazards such as mobile plant interaction with workers, fixed machinery, hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods, occupational health (including asbestos, noise, dust and hygiene), manual handling, confined space and working at heights. This role included a focus on maintaining compliance with environmental operating licences, ensuring worker safety, investigating incidents and implementing controls to prevent future occurrences, minimising environmental impacts, performing environmental monitoring and stakeholder management, including liaison with regulatory bodies, local council and neighbouring residents. Achievements included:• Reduction of Medical Treatment Injuries (MTIs) by 50% over a 12-month period through review of workplace design and ergonomics, engineering controls and worker engagement • Significantly improved relations with local residents, businesses and the NSW EPA through ongoing consultation and continuous investigation into operational improvements • Gained approval from 8 Local Councils in Sydney and regulators for road use of Quad Axle, Waste Ejection Semi-Trailers (first of their kind), operating under Higher Mass Limits at 50T GCM gaining significant payload increase and efficiency in unloading, compared with previous trailer combinations• Reduction in Sydney Water effluent sampling frequencies from 22 to 60 days (longest possible frequency) through ongoing monitoring and management of trade waste systems with contractors• Project managed external consultants for the design of a unique mechanical ventilation system to extract the air (and associated odour) from a waste transfer station in a highly urbanised area, then expel it at high velocity into the atmosphere
