Nicholas Lamar Wright, Ph.D. is a champion of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, & accessibility. He is a nationally recognized, award-winning higher education leader, scholar, and practitioner who excels at making connections and building inclusive cultures. Dr. Wright identifies as a multiracial (Black/White) man who graduated from the University of Louisville with a Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling and Personnel Services, specializing in College Student Personnel. Dr. Wright has a history of working in various functional areas in higher education, primarily in Disability Support Services, Diversity & Inclusion, and Academic Affairs. He led Student Accessibility Services as the Director at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. As well as being Director of Student Accessibility Services, he was the Chair of the Americans with Disabilities Act Committee to ensure equal access for students, employees, and the community. Dr. Wright continued this service by setting strategic DEI goals and working with an interdisciplinary team to charter the Disability Employee Affinity Group at the University of Kentucky.Dr. Wright’s philosophy in Student Affairs focuses on accessibility and inclusivity, which motivates him to build more inclusive cultures for people to express authenticity. Dr. Wright has published research in the Journal of College Student Development, Journal of College & Character, Genealogy, Developments, HELEN: The Journal of Human Exceptionality, and various chapters in academic literature on topics such as multiraciality, mentoring, campus racial climate, sense of belonging, prioritizing accessibility, and disability equity. Through his research in multiraciality, he was the first to coin the term "chronic codeswitching" to describe the complicated goal of capturing how Black/White multiracial students in higher education navigate broader intersectional ties stemming from their multiracial identities. Dr. Wright has led over 100 educational programs, training sessions, and workshops across the nation and internationally at various companies, higher education institutions, and conventions such as College Student Educators International (ACPA), National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), National Conference on Race & Ethnicity (NCORE), & the International Organization of Social Sciences and Behavioral Research (IOSSBR). Coordinated interpreting services for all students and guests who were Deaf or Hard of Hearing that required American Sign Language as an accommodation for clear communication at St. Cloud State University. Directed the Student Accessibility Services office and supervised a staff consisting of 11 individuals from 2 different labor unions: 4 full-time American Sign Language Interpreters (MAPE); 1 full-time Office Manager (AFSCME); 1 Contracted Disability Coordinator (AFSCME); 2 Graduate Assistants; 2 Student Workers; 1 Graduate Intern.Established “Beyond the Label,” which is a student involvement program dedicated to educating students, staff, and faculty regarding how to practice positive allyship and advocacy. This program has 36 members involved that shared their experiences as students with disabilities at 24 different events each semester. Managed budgetary responsibilities and control of Student Accessibility Services, which has a budget of nearly $300,000. Conducted performance evaluations for all employees in Student Accessibility Services by evaluating primary responsibilities and key competencies, to establish an action plan for improvement goals. Implemented an accommodation assessment to gauge the satisfaction level of students utilizing accessibility services, and to find areas of improvement to the programs and initiatives in Student Accessibility Services. -
