Profile bio

About Nicholas Penman, Phd

I enjoy using science to solve problems. I have worked on nanomaterials projects with goals ranging from the development of therapuetic agents to the formulation of 3D printable polymeric aerogels. I see the vast potential of nanomaterials in many technological sectors and enjoy the opportunity to collaborate to bring this potential to reality. Whether leading a project, working as a member of a team or working independently, I employ the best practices to the development of new technologies. My broad base of chemistry experience includes:-At the NASA Glenn Research Center I produced low viscosity polymer aerogel formulations for additive manufacturing applications, prepared and processed simple extruded 3D printed aerogel structures within 2 months of being on site.-Trained peers in the operation of analytical instrumentation, aseptic technique, synthetic protocols and mammalian cell culture methods.-Experience with training and analysis using chromatographic separation techniques including liquid and gas chromatography.-Led research and development projects to establish the proof of concept for the application of silver halide nanoparticles as antimicrobial agents, determining fit and feasibility of methods.-Determined elemental concentration of metallic nanoparticles through analysis of data from flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) and inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES).-Designed the experimental regimen for evaluating the preliminary efficacy of silver halide nanoparticles as antimicrobial agents.During my time at Kent State University I learned about specific biochemical pathways as well as the properties of biochemicals and how that can effect their activity. I enrolled in classes studying mechanisms of cancer formation as well as techniques to analyze biochemical reactions. I audited courses on bioinorganic chemistry and nanomaterials. The lab group I worked in has a focus on metallic nanomaterials, allowing me to focus my studies to examining the effect of these materials as potential medicines. The study of nanomaterials is part of the much broader materials science category. Nanomaterials have at least one dimension that is in the scale of 1-100 nanometers. This makes nanomaterials more difficult to characterize. Due to the diffraction limit of light, characterization of nanomaterials requires electron microscopy. Nanomaterials are of great interest because materials at this scale have different and often novel properties, when compared to the bulk material.

Graduate Research Assistant

Kent, Ohio, United States

As a graduate assistant at Kent State University I developed valuable skills in the laboratory and outside of it. In the laboratory I learned metathesis based synthesis for many metallic nanoparticles as well as methods to modify the surface of those materials. I learned many of those methods by research, scouring published articles for pertinent methods.

Graduate Student Intern

Cleveland/Akron, Ohio Area

My experience with nanomaterials earned me an internship at the NASA Glenn Research Center. This internship gave me the opportunity to work with polymeric nanomaterials in the form of aerogels. These materials are composed of polymer chains formed in a liquid substrate. In this form, it is known as a gel. In order to obtain an aerogel, the liquid substrate.
