Nick Walker is one of the company directors at eOsphere Limited and has over 30 years' experience working on satellite Earth observation research and applications. A key focus linking most of Nick’s work has been applying science and technology for solving real problem, often working closely with end users, to help develop solutions. Between 2018 and 2021 Nick was the project manager for the SIBELIUs project, delivering better resilience for the herding communities in Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan, supported by the UK Space Agency. The overall aim of SIBELIUs was to use satellite Earth observation derived environmental products to improve pasture management, and through this to support resilience for local herding communities. Realising this aim has entailed capacity building in key local, regional and central government bodies and other institutions, and co-working of SIBELIUs staff with in-country partners to facilitate more cost effective, efficient and sustainable satellite -based interventions.For many years Nick specialised on using satellite earth observation for monitoring the Polar regions. This included studying the feasibility of mapping the Antarctic bedrock using satellite borne radar systems, as well as monitoring sea ice conditions by developing products to measure ice pressure or to detect icebergs. Nick studied physics at the University of Reading and King’s College London, and has previously worked at the GEC Marconi Research Centre and the European Space Agency in Italy.
