Always grueling, at times enthralling, often soul-rending, there is nothing easy about taking a technology company from 0 to 1. I had a nearly 8 year run building out Personify, where we spearheaded the invention of now-ubiquitous Virtual Backgrounds categories, as well as the futuristic Teleporter (person vs. background segmentation, but in 3D space). What started as a simple post-acquisition sabbatical - to be spent rediscovering latent passions which took a backseat to the entrepreneur's myopia - turned into a whole vibe. Which is to say I quit my job at the ParentCo in Jan 2020 to do Bitcoin things, and haven't looked back. Been in this space for many years: losing my shirt, getting rugged, making poor moves, selling low and buying high. Somehow I managed to mine enough Eth w/ my hobby rigs and hold on to the handful of Bitcoins I bought for $104/ea on Coinbase.Currently, I'm appreciating Crypto Winter, which suits me much more than the euphoria of Up Only. Way more heads down focus on First Principles, on building blockchain-based Provenance; creating, trying out new tools and platforms as a daily habit; taking a step back and learning new skills like p5.js and solidity.

My first one went operational in Feb 2014. I hashed and HODLed, tinkered and learned, whilst focusing my energies on my day job.Over time, I've become entirely convinced not only about the long-term efficacy of the technology that is Bitcoin and Ethereum, but also the philosophy which undergirds them as a technical and financial revolution. To realize the long-term value of their growth as assets, I figured that if the Bitcoin et al. I held had a zero cost basis b/c I'd mined them myself, it would be much easier to cope with the volatility of the space. That's turned out to be true. I've been through several 80-90% drawdowns, and never sold. But that's only half the battle to keep what I mined and the few Bitcoins I'd bought for $100 each. I've never been scammed, or hacked, or lost it all in a trade. Because I don't use leverage, nor keep money on exchanges. I simply hold the base assets on my private keys. That's it.Just accumulate cheaply, and HODL. That's not just a meme. It's a deep first principle. Same with "not your keys, not your Bitcoin."As my personal stash grew in value, I decided to make a radical bet on myself. In Jan 2020, I quit my job to do Bitcoin things full-time, and homeschool my kiddos.I'm having a blast stewarding some of the most important Provenance to be imbued onto The World Computer, like Cryptopunks. And ofc, continuing to mine. Now, in the depths of Crypto Winter, I build: myself, my mentality and well-being, and my technical skillsets. It's easier to focus the mind without the cacaphony of market euphoria as constant distraction. I am as physically and mentally healthy, and financially flush, as I've ever been. I'm so excited for the future of this space. If you have questions about crypto, feel free to ping me. I've helped many Anons change their lives through Bitcoin, just as I've changed mine. Show less
