I research and develop high performance sensors and actuator systems for wearable devices that are intuitive, affordable, and accessible.My engineering specialty is the intersection between mechatronics, electrical instrumentation, and materials science.I founded Gaia Technologies with the goal to "Restore Function with Innovation." This has grown into a line of products designed to help people with and without physical disabilities alike. By shifting our approach from making medical devices to making broadly useful tools, we believe that we have created a synergy that allows us to improve the performance and accessibility our products. Current products in development are gesture sensing sockets, subvocalization/pseudo-telepathy headsets, high-strength low-weight hands, and inexpensive servo-like artificial muscles.At the University of Utah, I lead a research effort to develop biomimetic textile artificial muscles for biomedical and robotic applications. Design, simulation, manufacturing, control, and testing of the material properties, electrical systems, and mechanical performance are my primary areas of research. With the help of a talented team, we have established robust methods to manufacture, test, and optimize these actuators at industrial scale.
