As an inpatient registered nurse, I assess the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health needs of veterans with spinal cord injuries. I initiate and advocate for interdisciplinary interventions based on the veteran’s needs and preferences. I teach veterans in the rehabilitation program how to adjust to life with a spinal cord injury, including healthy coping skills, adaptive equipment options, and empowering them to direct care at the hospital and at home. I support patients at the inpatient spinal cord injury center with activities of daily living, perform range of motion exercises and other activities associated with rehabilitation, and assist nurses and other health care team members with patient care as needed.

I perform health assessments, establish care plans, administer medications, and evaluate patient responses under the observation of a Registered Nurse. I also collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care for two patients each shift.

To support my employer's independence, I assist with personal care, cooking, household chores and running errands. In this position, I've learned about ableism and the privileges I have compared to a disabled person. Being my first caregiving role, I've learned a lot about myself and am grateful for an employer that creates a positive work environment focused on social justice.
