Working in public services at UVA's Special Collections Library gave me a deep admiration for archival research, how we engage with historical artifacts, and the work of preservation. At the reference desk, I checked out and discharged rare books and manuscripts; taught students and new researchers how to handle delicate materials; and aided researchers in finding materials relevant to their work. I also assisted librarians with curating and presenting materials for class presentations and gave group presentations on “show-and-tell” items, such as Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass manuscript (ca. 1855), Martha Washington’s mourning jewelry (1805), illuminated medieval manuscripts (ca. 1450), Babylonian clay tablets (ca. 2350 BC), and an art book printed in invisible ink.
