Profile bio

About Nichole Sullivan

I chose Chemistry as my profession because it captured my willingness to try new things, push boundaries, my passion for experimentation, observation, and learning, and provided the opportunity to meet a wide variety of people and travel the world. In my travels I have spent time visiting, experiencing, learning, and trying to become part of another culture. I have found the skill that has been most useful in my career is not technical in nature but my ability to embrace differences between other people and me, my culture and other cultures. My initial professional and academic career goal was to have a broad general knowledge in all branches of science and chemistry. In practice, I have adapted to the needs of my employers and have become a self-taught computer scientist and web developer. I always attempt to experience the world in new ways and have a positive effect on society. All my employment has been at small companies (25 or less). My formal training is as a materials chemist but during my employment I have done as much business development as scientific research. All have been dynamic environments in which I performed continually changing duties as needed and physically built the facilities, prototypes, and led experimental planning. As a graduate student at Pennsylvania State University, I gained experience and laboratory skills in a wide range of scientific and engineering fields which includes material science, chemical engineering, and electrical engineering. The opportunity to work on many multi-disciplinary projects was presented and eagerly pursued. As an undergraduate my formal education included mathematics, biology, biochemistry, applied physics, catalytic and physical chemistry. With diverse research and development experiences I have a wide range of wet laboratory and computer science skills, in a broad array of scientific fields. This has prepared me to perform new tasks and overcome challenges.Check out my professional site - https://colee222.github.io/NFS-Adv-Sci/

N5 Sensors, Inc. is a University of Maryland (UMD) spin-off commercializing a disruptive chip-scale gas sensor technology for industrial, environmental, and safety monitoring. N5’s microsensor arrays on a single chip aimed to replace multiple conventional macroscale gas sensors used in portable multigas detector. These new sensors, built using the same fabrication processes that are commonly used for silicon computer chips, are small, accurate, low-power and capable of detecting multiple gases at the same time. Using the patent-pending sensing architecture, N5 worked to develop low-cost, ultra-compact multigas detectors, which interfaced with mobile devices, allowing industrial workers, first-responders, and soldiers to assess the dangers of their surroundings in real-time using rugged mobile platforms. At the time of employment, N5 was targeting 2 different market segments:1) Low-cost hand-held industrial monitoring – This is a billion dollar global market with demand across various industrial operations from petrochemical, mining, natural gas, plastic, fertilizers, and many others.2) Next-generation of mobile devices based sensing for various consumer applications - This is a nascent market fueled by explosion of sensors for different phones and other mobile devices. N5’s low-power, low-profile, and low-cost technology is ideally-suited for those applications. At N5 I assisted in looking for strategic partnerships and investments to develop field-deployable systems for key applications and markets.
