Nick Behling, P.E., C.E.M. Email and Phone Number
My name is Nick Behling, and I am a Senior Energy and Data Engineer at Sandia National Laboratories, supporting the California Net Zero Organization.I am a licensed mechanical engineer (HVAC/R) registered in Arizona and California; and a Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) under the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). I hold an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Energy and Sustainability, from Northwestern University; and a B.S. in Civil Engineering and a Certificate in Mechanical Engineering — with a concentration in “Sustainable Energy Systems” — from The University of Texas at Austin. My interests lie in the energy sector, working as a mechanical, civil, environmental, water resources, or other related engineer, with a focus in renewable/alternative energy and sustainability.I have been passionate about the environment for as long as I can remember; I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue a career that would not only offer me new and exciting challenges every day, but would help in creating a better — and greener — future for our society. My internships in the water-related engineering sector and research with the Webber Energy Group are at the intersection of the "Water-Energy Nexus", the concept that water and energy are interrelated. This concept is an extension of my childhood interests in the environment, and I hope I can work around this concept at a higher level. In order to properly convey an idea, an engineer should not only have a strong background in what he or she is presenting, but must also effectively communicate their thoughts to their audience(s). My leadership roles in my university's club tennis team, Chi Epsilon, tutoring, and coaching have developed my skills in effective communication, and have helped me become a more well-rounded, sociable person. If you have any questions or comments, or would like to see my resume, you can visit my website at www.nickbehling.com, or reach me at nicholasbehling@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

M.S. Mechanical Engineering Research AssistantNorthwestern University Sep 2018 - Dec 2019Evanston, IllinoisAs a mechanical engineering master’s student, I assisted Dr. Jennifer Dunn in analyzing and evaluating whether producing sodium hydroxide (NaOH) from seawater- and brackish groundwater-reverse osmosis (SW-RO, BGW-RO) desalination brine, posed any energy/environmental advantages to conventional methods of NaOH production, as co-product valuation is a potential route for making desalination more viable; this research project involved reviewing extensive published literature for information on material and water intensity of conventional NaOH production and desalination, and comparing conventional- and desalination-based methods for NaOH production using Argonne National Laboratory’s Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions and Energy use in Transportation (GREET®) model. -
Engineering Fluid Mechanics GraderNorthwestern University Jan 2019 - Mar 2019Evanston, Illinois, United StatesI worked under Dr. Neelesh Patankar and graduate student Tom Zhao, I graded homeworks, midterms, and final exams for Dr. Patankar’s undergraduate engineering fluid mechanics course (ME 373-0) for the Winter 2019 Quarter. -
Graduate Engineering InternGeosyntec Consultants May 2018 - Aug 20188217 Shoal Creek Blvd Suite 200, Austin, Tx 78757Geosyntec Consultants further showed me the relationship between water and energy. I assisted with a State CCR (Coal Combustion Residuals) permit application for the regulatory closure of a large ash pond at a Confidential Utility in the southeastern United States. The permit application included development of design for stormwater and contact water management systems (including pre-development and post-development analysis), detention pond design, culvert design, open channel flow design, and energy dissipation design using HydroCAD and Federal Highway Administration HY-8 modeling software, as well as area calculations using AutoCAD.Next, I helped design a stormwater bypass channel and an emergency spill for an existing small dam owned by a Confidential Client at an oil and gas production site in South Texas. Analysis included stormwater modeling using HydroCAD, and emergency spillway design for the Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) event. Then, I performed data review and management of groundwater elevation measurements at regulatory wells for quarterly and annual reporting to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for permit compliance at an industrial wastewater treatment plant landfarm application site along the Texas coast.Additionally, I prepared electronic boring logs from subsurface geologic investigation associated with a lateral landfill expansion permit application for an existing landfill in east Austin.I also conducted open records file searches at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for landfill permit surface water management, as well as water well ownership and registration records. Finally, I conducted field work and engineering oversight for contractor installation of geomembrane liner system for wet pond facilities in south Austin, Texas. -
Undergraduate Research Assistant, Webber Energy GroupThe University Of Texas At Austin Aug 2017 - Aug 2018Webber Energy Group - The University of Texas at Austin, Department of Mechanical Engineeringhttp://www.webberenergygroup.com/Assisted Ph.D. students Bruk Berhanu and Anna Schleifer in developing a modeling framework to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of decentralized water supplies (on-site collection, treatment, and reuse of rain-, gray-, and black-water on a land parcel), to offset demand for potable water and wastewater services and reduce physical extent of centralized water and wastewater infrastructure. Assisted Scott Vitter, Ph.D., in identifying high-potential customer segments for energy and water savings in the residential sector, and identifying least-cost appliance retrofit strategies for said consumer segments in support of sustainability initiatives across the United States.Research involved extensive literature review, data analyzation using Python, AnyLogic (Java), and Microsoft Excel, and assisting Scott, Bruk, and Anna in the completion of their dissertations. -
Engineering Fluid Mechanics TutorThe University Of Texas At Austin Aug 2016 - Aug 2017Tutored fellow engineering students the fundamentals of fluid mechanics in the Cockrell School of Engineering. Required to work in both classroom and laboratory settings. -
Water Resources Engineering InternLeonard Rice Engineers Inc. Jul 2017 - Aug 20171101 Satellite View #301, Round Rock, Tx 78665LRE Water, LLC - a Leonard Rice Engineers, Inc. company.LRE Water, LLC taught me the importance of water and how finite a resource it is. I worked on multiple projects that involved allocating water rights between the Gulf Coast Water Authority and its municipal and industrial customers, including DowDuPont, Valero, Thomas S. Mackey Water Treatment Plant, and the surrounding Texas City areas. Additionally, I assisted in performing topographic and bathymetric surveys of the settling pond at Brushy Creek Municipal Utility District's water treatment plant, and the stormwater pond at Shirley McDonald Park. These projects involved extensive data analyzation using MATLAB and the Water Rights Analysis Package (WRAP) Modeling System, field measurements of important hydraulic parameters, writing reports, and creating presentations for the client(s). -
Water Practice Engineering InternCp&Y, Inc. May 2016 - Aug 201613809 Research Blvd #300, Austin, Tx 78750CP&Y, Inc. showed me the importance of energy usage and economics in designing water treatment alternatives. One of the major projects I worked on evaluated the feasibility of replacing a gravity belt thickener (used to thicken/dewater wastewater sludge prior to conversion into compost) with a high-efficiency centrifuge dewatering system at the Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant, after comparing capital and operating costs, process and energy efficiencies, quality of processed sludge, and health and environmental concerns. Another project that I worked on involved providing solutions in controlling the amount of dissolved oxygen added in the wastewater in one of the aeration basins at the Cedar Park Water Reclamation Facility.
